Exclusive: The state government will back five new pumped hydro schemes – from Illawarra to Bathurst and as far north as New England – as the energy market operator issues a new warning that NSW faces an energy shortfall | Laura_R_Chung

The state government will announce funding for five new pumped hydro schemes across NSW, from the Illawarra to Bathurst and as far north as New England, as the national energy market operator issues a new warning that the state faces an energy shortfall.

The approved projects are in Lithgow, Yetholme, Wollomombi, Bowral and Muswellbrook, and if completed would provide a combined capacity of 1.75 gigawatts. The state government has a target to build at least 2 gigawatts of new long-duration storage, which includes pumped hydro, by 2030. Climate Council senior researcher Tim Baxter said the outlook highlighted the need for governments to deploy clean energy solutions and accelerate projects in the pipeline, including key energy storage projects like pumped hydro.

Laura_R_Chung If the Snowy 2 debacle is any indication this will be a massive waste of taxpayers money and time. Better off to put solar panels on every roof in NSW and make any new build 100% renewable energy.

Laura_R_Chung Energy shortfall with current situation. However that will go away with projects that are currently more than half built, with more projects in the pipeline.

Laura_R_Chung Show some real leadership and get started on nuclear energy. That’s assuming the carbon / climate scenario is real.

Laura_R_Chung I hope they have a back up plan for extreme drought. Look what's happening with hydro power supply in China right now 😱.

Laura_R_Chung and the solar power is giving us really cheap electricity too............royal commission next?

Laura_R_Chung Energy shortfall in this modern world… the leftist imbeciles dream. Shame on our governments ineptitude.

Laura_R_Chung UK-EU 10 years ahead of Australia with renewables & they can’t rely on them to keep the power on UK-USA-EU-India & China all building or plan to build nuclear power station Wake up Australia

Laura_R_Chung Opportunity for the public to invest?..probably not..just LNP private partnerships and mates again Dom_Perrottet
