President Joe Biden said by 2030, the U.S. would have 950 million solar panels, 120,000 wind turbines and 2,300 battery plants to store clean energy. Recent growth in solar, wind and battery storage put his goals within reach.

Problems at the micro level are also likely, said Lori Bird, director of renewable energy at the World Resources Institute, a global research group focused on sustainable technology. Finding places to put new energy facilities will be one of the biggest challenges in the next decade.

A host of concerns can block the installation of any energy array, including impacts on wildlife and opposition from local residents.
