Cost of energy needed to run small midlands cafe has climbed by more than 250 per cent in less than 12 months

“I was working in the cafe on Monday morning when the bill arrived,” Ms Dolan said. “When I opened it I thought I was seeing things or had missed a decimal point. It really took the wind out of my sails. ”

That company exited the Irish market earlier this year citing challenging market conditions in the face of rising energy prices. While she was switched to the bigger company without any loss of supply, she did lose the switching discount she had been offered by Iberdrola. “We have gone from paying a daily rate of €34 last year to paying €123 per day now,” she said. . “When those figures are spread the cost of a year it means an annual electricity bill which would have been around €12,000 is now going to be around €45,000. There is no way we will be able to cope with that. We will pay this bill because we have used the electricity but we would not be able to pay at that level every two months.

The entire Irish Government and Civil Service live off us private sector workers. Think long and hard about that and let me know what benefits/security we get in return for working 5 days a week 48 weeks a year and giving most of our salary in taxes. No rush.

Something not right about this. Other coffee shops of the same size are not getting bills for this amount.

Doesn’t seem to be any explanation why a small coffee shop is using €9,000 worth of electricity despite this story being all over social media today. Any insights apart from the obvious?

How is that possible?

The price you pay to support the current thing SlavaUkraini

I will not be standing up for any business nor supporting them when they would have closed the door in my face a number of months ago

They need to check if their neighbours are plugged into their sockets..

No sympathy, a Ukraine flag in bio. He should ask zelensky for the money since he is getting hand outs to buy weapons

That'll teach her to stop repeatedly boiling the kettle 😆😂

That’s insane and just one example of a business , milk producers, bread companies ,any business in this country ,prices are going to skyrocket at this rate and business fail ,only the monster chains will survive.. a cartel of large business with little competition

Bill summary for previous bill says 'None'. Can not see any details in article with response from the company to check if an error generating the bill or problem with previous readings. My elec company did not take an actual reading for over 12 months but estimates were accurate.

Me: 'They're trying to get rid of the middle class & small businesses' Them: 'Shut up conspiracy theorist'

EU sanctions, warmongering and Green Party policies are the cause of this. If you have a 🇺🇦 flag in your bio stop moaning.

Solar?

🇺🇦 There’s a price for this flag

The amount of energy use required to produce a bill that big, isn't possible in a premises that size. conor_pope did you bother fact checking this before publishing? Clearly there is a mistake or the cafe was on estimated bills.

The people will take to the streets soon....

Where your previous bills estimate ie no meter reading? If this is the case you were getting longer credit terms on energy you were using

Don't say you were not warned that this was coming sit at home and put up with it or organise yourselves and get mass protests going like the water charges movement and bring it directly to these parasites in government

I wonder why the gov are letting it happen? this will happen more and more, and the gov. just say they don't want to scare away investors. which doesnt make sense to me. who'd be afraid to invest in the most expensive domestic energy market in Europe?

Sure lets just build more Energy/Water Guzzling Datacenters

Businesses must be protected. Especially small ones who don't have the resources of larger. They are the backbone on the country.

People said they would close down small businesses and vulture funds etc will swoop in and buy them up cheaply but they wouldn't listen, not 1 union has called for them to come together and fight this agenda

Great business. Have ate there on numerous occasions. A lovely place. Would be a pity to see it go. That's extortionate paying those prices. Electric Ireland should hang their heads in shame. Not like their customer service is any good . Corporate greed

8.5k of that is for the vulture fund investments.

Vee penetraitz zee kabinetzz..........

It's the first bill , could be possible that previous tenants didn't pay bill and that's what the meter is reading , doubt it's a 9k bill ..

the people of ireland voted for neo-liberals and globalists and this is the result, only a strong nationalist leader can save this nation

I find it hard to feel any sympathy for small businesses after most of them discriminated against a large cohort of the population. Maybe this place was different? If so, I hope that they can weather the storm.

I beleive SF suggested the decoupling of gas and electricity pricing methods months ago, so it cant be their fault.

The start of the recession....sorry depression is only just starting. Remember that at the ballot box

There has to be one smart journalist to figure it out.

And it's a gorgeous place for lunch ..coffee etc ..shocking money ..how can businesses survive
