In a decades long study, American bison—also called buffalo—provided nearly three times the environmental benefit to prairie ecosystems as cows, and researchers aren’t yet sure why

, part of a coordinated effort to deny a key food source to Native American populations. The new study’s findings suggest that ongoing efforts to reintroduce bison into their former range could have enormous benefits not only to Native peoples and their culture, but also to the land and natural environment, tribal buffalo program manager for the National Wildlife Federation’s Tribal Partnerships Program, who was not involved in the new study.

In the herbivore-free plots, much of the landscape was covered by just four species of native grasses: big bluestem, Indian grass, switchgrass, and little bluestem. However, when bison and cattle were allowed to mow these species down, other, less dominant plants were able to thrive.Researchers at the Dunn Ranch Prairie in Missouri put Crittercams on bison to see how they interact with the ecosystem. One particular beneficiary was a tall, flowering forb known as rigid goldenrod.

“Bison also go around forming disturbances in the soil, called wallows,” says Ratajczak. “These are areas where they roll around and shake off their winter fur, and that creates this little hot spot of very different types of soil characteristics you wouldn’t find otherwise.”

How wonderful, that these magnificent animals can help with climate change---help other animals and humans. God Bless, Mary Ann C.❤️❤️

Nature had a better idea after all

Why is one bovine combatting climate change, while another bovine is responsible for it? And why isn’t the solution to climate change, switching from raising cattle to raising bison? Something doesn’t add up.

Thank goodness! And reintroduction of the wolf will complete the balance

Herds of buffalo destroy vegetative soil cover, including plant species at risk, and cause devastating topsoil loss throug wind erosion.

Will they have any water to drink?

EVERYTHING is correlated with climate, especially money, tons of money. Do you have a 'study' on that?

So cows are bad for climate change because they fart but buffalo are good? Don't buffalo fart? Laughable garbage pushing a hoax.

Without people, the world would thrive!!! We are insignificant on this planet!! We destroy, consume, and kill almost every resource!!

Wouldn't organic grass fed pasture raised cows do the same thing?

Because nature is always better

Maybe because they evolved together, whereas cattle aren’t.

Bison have become 'keystone' species, for the prarie ecosystem.

Also this 🐃= buffalo 🦬= bison. Not interchangeable.

I'm sure it's their personalities

I'll venture 2 guesses a) cowd cause more erosion by trampling on the same ground over & over & b) most cows eat an unnatural diet which eventually causes prolapsed intestines. digestive issues (unhealthy poop) is part of the ecosystem

If you dont know why after decades of funding studies then you've been duped. I'll not repeat the first dozen replies , its so bloody obvious. No wonder climate change is so bad if we rely upon your scientists to promote educational change. Sort yourselves out. Do better

They're bigger. You're welcome.

I’ll take a swing… because they are a native species (and not an invasive species) that has co-evolved with the tall grass prairie plant communities?

❤️

That’s buffaloes 🦬 it pity too

Maybe because buffalo, unlike the cow, weren’t “domesticated”, a whole species existence just made, shaped, formed to service man in all the ways that cows do, that has to have some effect. Whereas the buffalo, have lived, existed pretty much on their own, naturally, as they have

They really are some magnificent beings

ruff🥪🍶🌳hi titanic.

Maybe because they're not hopped up on hormones and antibiotics? They are adapted to eating the native grasses? They're poop is better for the soil?

This a very tough , beautiful animal, i love it , that they could survive in the very coldest temperature they should facing it on the nature

Buffalo roam while cows are fenced in,therefore seed distribution builds ecosystems Cows poop in piles in Texas dust

Wierd are the ways of nature! If man could explain everything then he could create Nature himself

Look to the migration of wildebeests to see the 'why' - cows graze in understocked/over grazed pastures while bison (historically) moved constantly - fertilizing, breaking up hard ground, not eating all the best grass before moving on. Time along river banks was also limited.

Just taking a shot here, but possibly because the prairie ecosystems adapted in the presence of bison, and not cows from Asia?
