The controversial Adani Carmichael coal mine in central Queensland has ramped up to commercial production just as surging coal and power prices send earnings soaring for the ASX’s energy sector.

“Whitehaven Coal was the number one performing stock on the ASX 100 stock over the last 12 months” with a 154 per cent rise, Macquarie Equities said. “While the outlook for Santos is compelling, it is even more attractive for Woodside , on our estimates,” Barrenjoey energy analyst Paul McTaggart said.
