This refusal to believe personal action matters in fight against climate change is foolish on multiple levels

This refusal to believe personal action matters is not just foolish on a pragmatic level. Photograph: Getty ImagesTaylor Swift has an environment problem. The singer’s private jet has racked up more air miles than any of her fellow celebrities, according to the sustainability firm Yard, dumping tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere and hastening the demise of our fragile and burning planet. Kylie Jenner — the youngest Kardashian sister — has a lot to answer for too.

No longer do our personal choices matter at all. Instead, “the big polluters’ masterstroke was to blame the climate crisis on you and me” argued George Monbiot in the Guardian. Michael Mann lamented the “industry-funded ‘deflection campaigns’ aimed to divert attention from big polluters and place the burden on individuals.” In the Daily Beast, Jay Michaelson said “individual behaviour change isn’t action — it’s distraction.

But rather than progressive or thoughtful, this message is about as solipsistic and individualistic as they come. The fatalists explain that the problem is a “systemic” one, far beyond the reaches of a 10-year-old’s recycling habits. But, we might ask what these people think the so-called system is comprised of if not people like you and I. The “system” and its members are not separate entities.

The politicians insist on usreducing our carbon footprints while they generate a huge amount of emissions by travelling on private jets dozens of times year, run two homes, and are ferriedaround by chauffeur - whatever happened to them using a bus like the rest of us ?

Climate change is real but the reality is there is not much we can do about it. We're already at the stage where we should be saying 'if only there was something we could have done' and there was, countless times but we are lethargic creatures, waiting for someone else to fix it

Thinking making the Irish public abandon their agricultural sector and their transport will make a tiny bit of difference on a global scale is equally stupid on so many levels. Tackling climate change means Tackling consumerism, that has global impact.

To the climate change deniers. What if you’re wrong! Those helping to halt the climate change are doing good for our beautiful world and, at least, no harm. If you are mistaken think of the consequences. Btw the earth is round!

Not foolish, green hysteria and taxes are tho - there is nothing EU can do at this point. Also after COVID, no longer 'trust the science'

Ah ye but we’re not having app trackers and social credits.

Same invisible enemy as Covid19 ™️. Same end goal. Brought to us by the same people. Takes the same blind faith. Unfortunately it will take a lot longer than two years to be shown for the total bullshit it is.

The oil giant British Petroleum (BP) actually hired PR professionals to invent a concept designed to blame individuals, not fossil fuel companies, for climate change. And it was BP that revealed the phrase 'carbon footprint', along with a 'carbon footprint calculator', in 2004.

If we all pay more taxes would that help?

Absolute and utter garbage

Break up the WEF and lock up its leaders and political puppets and the world will be saved

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡🤡

It’s over man! Everyone knows that climate change is a hoax in order to take control away from the citizens and give to globalist elites. It’s over. Move on

No it's not

Propaganda just like the endless scamdemic

Prove it.

What a god awful opinion piece. Time and time again we've been told we aren't doing enough. Cheers, what about the giant international scale industries pumping billions of tones of carbon into the air? Too scared to bite the hands of your investors?

By all means why doesnt the IT editorial go off grid, live in tents or caves, go zero carbon usage and report back to us in 20 years time and tell us how it worked out for them..very quick to pontificate and talk down to everyone, while still swanning around the world..muppets

Where is this climate change

Foolishness is to think that punishing Irish farmers & carbon taxing Irish people will make any impact whatsoever on global warming, given there is no pressure on China, India & USA to reduce their immissions. Also those advocating for it,continue to fly on private jets & jachts.

Christ. How much money do the deniers have. In full force here.

Its all bullshit driven by money.

Sanctimonious liberal nonsense. Dismantling capitalism is the only hope we have of saving our habitable biosphere which will require a monumental collective effort on a global scale.

...

Jesus times, another propaganda piece, funny you never actually target the source and always target the public with your government sponsored propaganda.
