Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: production hot hatch EV spied

Confirming the development of its first hot-hatch EV, the company said: ‘Hyundai Motor’s first electric N, Ioniq 5 N will hit the global market in 2023. More details about the first EV N will be unveiled later.’ See our render below for what it could look like when finally revealed. The 5 hot hatch is ahead of the 6 streamliner saloon in the production plan, explaining why our spies have already caught the go-faster hot hatch on manoeuvres in prototype guise.

‘Could you imagine we weren’t working on one already?’ added a proud Albert Biermann, the ex-BMW executive who launched the N department and still acts in an ambassadorial role. Hyundai Motor Group’s 800-volt e-GMP platform is built for ultimate flexibility, with rear- and all-wheel-drive variants and even the opportunity to power external devices.

Executives have already been stress-testing the e-GMP platform during its development process, reaching eye-popping power outputs, engineers told us. Biermann, chassis wizard and then head of R&D for Hyundai Motor Group, told CAR in 2020 that the platform ‘will go almost up to 600 horsepower in certain models.’Hyundai’s been experimenting with high-performance electric cars for years, the most recent iteration being the RM20e .

Some elements within N division regard the ‘racing midship’ demo car as the catalyst for the super-powerful halo cars for the performance brand now confirmed to launch in the coming years.
