Two major transmission line projects promise cleaner, more sustainable energy for Victoria and NSW. But some western Victorian locals fear the infrastructure will ruin the landscape and their lifestyle.

Le Péché Gourmand co-owner Marie Williams says she fears it is these farmers who could pack up and leave the region if AusNet's plans go ahead and, consequently, crush her customer base."If the farmers aren't there anymore, we lose half our customers."

"Looking at towers isn't the most pleasant thing. It's hard to grasp how far it'll go and how much it's going to affect the region," she said.Last week further plans for another transmission line through western Victoria were released by AEMO and Transgrid.Pitched as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity by the energy operators, the Victoria to New South Wales Interconnector West power link aims to allow the two states to share electricity.

"Energy costs form a large part of the household budget so most people would support this concept," Councillor McRae said. Deputy Mayor Jen Bray told ABC Ballarat Breakfast the council was "not opposed to renewable energy", but how it was delivered was important. "We acknowledge the importance of considering all reasonably practicable route refinement options, which may, in exceptional circumstances, include partial undergrounding short distances," he said.If the projects come to fruition as planned, Newlyn potato farmer Kain Richardson's property will be surrounded by transmission lines, and have the VNI West transmission station at his "back doorstep".Farmer Kain Richardson's property in the town of Newlyn.

Yeh focus on power lines instead of all the complaints from people near wind turbines.. derp

Any reaction from Bowenchris or isn’t this newsworthy? What transmission lines will be needed in Gippsland for the recently announced off shore wind farm region? Converting to a renewable energy superpower isn’t about just making announcements. tanya_plibersek AlboMP

Idyllic country life like worsening droughts and floods?

interviews another cafe owner. Well, I'll be darned. No cafes on a cooked planet.

Do not like it, sit in the dark !!!

'...co-owner Marie Williams says she fears it is these farmers who could pack up and leave the region if AusNet's plans go ahead and, consequently, crush her customer base.' She sound like she really cares about the 'idyllic country life.' 🙄

NIMBY

Why do country people have to put up with the wind turbines, the solar farms and all the transmission towers....build them where the power is needed in the cities.

They did a report on underground, 10 times dearer and take 3 times longer, possibly making the project not feasible

Not just Victoria - there will be lines in other states AND the proposed 10,000 km of transmission lines will need min 20,000 towers up to 80m high And large new terminal stations will be built as well We should all be concerned about rampant industrialisation of the countryside

Such a beat up. Farmers aren’t going to move.

Build wind turbines along all of the coastal suburban parkland instead. Problem solved

Guess those businesses & people would prefer to pay higher electricity prices instead? Where was the balanced questions? What an absolute poor story by the . It’s like they’re taking the cues from a Murdoch lackey 🤔 ItaButtroseMustGo abc auspol

Oh here we go again … I hope these “some locals” are not just another LiberalAus astroturf group like the Waurbra Foundation

You can't blame them, it looks shit and the experts say it decreases the value of realestate by 44%. Spend the extra money and put them in the ground.

It's official Australia has surpassed the Brits as the number 1 country for whinging. This is why we have high power prices and no advancement in climate policy.

Vandals. Why can't they connect solar and wind farms to the existing grid using WiFi? Think outside the box, people, and protect the environment of our hipster towns. Sheesh.

Now do wind turbines. I ferken dare ya!

Underground not feasible....you mean....you don't want to spend the money....and the govt lets them get away with it.
