Something great is coming to Africa in December, 2022. For the first time ever, the World Circular Economy Forum will take place in Kigali, the Republic of Rwanda. The government of Rwanda, the African Circular Economy Alliance, and the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, will jointly host the event with international partners. African countries have been grappling with the challenge of ensuring they achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in view of their general underperformance in the Millennium Development Goals. Likewise, the prospects for their achieving the Nationally Determined Contributions’ targets hang in the balance. Hence, the circular economy presents a window for a new lease of life.

Africa is energy poor. It runs on liquid fuels and biomass for energy, which adversely impacts the environment. There is an urgent need to change the energy dynamic using the vast resources available to her. The circular economy is a system which aims to get the most out of materials, keep products and materials in use and design them to be cycled back into the economy, thus eliminating waste.

Certainly, this will take concerted action from businesses and regulators in these climes. Companies that use critical materials in their products need to get ahead of the issue. They need a circular economy strategy, to prioritise key materials and set targets and measurable progress. They need to think about a product’s end-of-life at the start of its life; as well as the role they can play in extending the product’s life or building a reverse supply chain to bring the product back.
