A terawatt-hour of electricity from nuclear energy is associated with 0.03 deaths . That makes it even safer than wind energy, which is associated with 0.04 deaths per TWh, mostly from accidents during the installation process, drownings on offshore sites and helicopter collisions with turbines. Only solar energy is less deadly than nuclear. Coal is the deadliest because of the air pollution it causes: one TWh is linked to 24.6 deaths.
As a rule, the safest energy sources are also the greenest. Nuclear energy produces just four tonnes of greenhouse gases per gigawatt-hour of electricity , the same as wind energy . Despite this, nuclear energy used for electricity production has been in decline since 2001 and now only accounts for a tenth of the global total. Fossil fuels still produce most of the world’s electricity: coal, gas and oil made up around 62% last year.
Nuclear energy has had an image problem for some time. Major accidents have made it seem more deadly than it is and theremains controversial. But attitudes are shifting. Germany had planned to turn off its remaining three nuclear plants by the end of the year. Now, amid concerns about the country’s dependence on Russian gas and soaring energy prices, its government appears to be re-considering. Britain is constructing itsin more than two decades. And in France, the government is set to pay €9.
The trouble with nuclear is when things go wrong they go wrong extremely quickly with devastating results that last for hundreds if not thousands of years. I would rather have 20 coal or gas power stations than 1 nuclear power station if I had my way I would ban nuclear full stop

A terawatt-hour of electricity is 37% of nuclear energy— it’s heat energy, the fact you you just hid the reference to heat in your nuclear energy phrasing speaks volume. Nuclear reactors are also known as heat machines. It’s the heat that we manage to convert a third of it to
The choice of where we get our energy from has never been a logical one.
I think the number for solar is too low. At least 3 deaths are attributed to failure of solar plants (landslides, flooding, and panels blown off by typhoons) in Japan alone over the past 3 years.
FUKUSHIMA!!!!
Hydropower produces deaths by drowning?
No kidding
Clearly nuclear ☢️ is the best option to power out society… and desalinate water on a massive scale, pipeline it back into the Colorado River, California’s reservoirs. Hundreds of modular reactors that don’t need to take up an entire river delta to operate.
Death to coal! The era of Nuclear Energy is about to begin! All Hail the Queen her Majesty!
