The head of the U.N. body promoting development is warning that the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and the war in Ukraine have led to “an unprecedented reversal” of decades of progress in combatting global poverty and hunger and ensuring education for children everywhere.

A high-level ECOSOC meeting on advancing the U.N.’s 2030 goals and building back better from the COVID-19 pandemic ended Monday with the adoption of a 32-page ministerial declaration.

The ministers also expressed great concern that the pandemic has widened inequalities and created new obstacles to achieving the U.N. goals and stressed the urgency to address the impact, underlying causes and challenges exacerbated by COVID-19. There is a saying that “a hungry man is an angry man,” he said, citing people recently venting their anger of the lack of food and gasoline, including in Sri Lanka.
