For sheer technological firepower, it’s hard to beat the lightning-fast EQS53. It’s yours from $328,400.

The best electric vehicle in the world has landed. Perhaps. Such things are entirely subjective: the Porsche Taycan is arguably better looking and certainly marginally faster, the Hyundai Ioniq 5/Kia EV6 twins are stylish and vastly cheaper, the all-electric Tesla brand has a bigger fan base, the BMW iX has plenty of supercool features.

Those who aren’t in quite such a hurry may prefer to wait for the EQS450, which will follow as soon as the local Benz operation can get stock . The EQS450 should be about $250,000 and will have slightly less hectic performance but a driving range above 600 km. The styling is polarising. For those who hate it, there is bad news to come: the shape will be replicated in the smaller Benz EV sedans. Personally, I find it attractive and distinctive, except for the rear view, which is a bit bland. There’s a hatch there at the tail, by the way, and a huge rear luggage area. The nose though is crammed with cooling and electric components, and stays closed except during servicing.

As the acceleration figures listed above make clear, this is a stunningly quick machine with instant power from any speed because that monstrous torque is available from rest. The rear motor does the work during normal driving. When you pick up the pace the front seamlessly joins in. However, when things are really challenging the system can near instantly send 100 per of the torque to the front or the rear. When you look at the car from the outside, the angle of the rear steering is extreme, at least at slow speeds. This gives a very small turning circle and makes manoeuvring easy .

Mind you, there’s always been something quite odd about taking the biggest, most luxurious Benzes and giving them the AMG treatment. They end up not as quick as smaller, nimbler Benzes, nor as comfortable as the limousines the buyers presumably wanted, yet dearer than either. Then again, the formula works, so it won’t be changing any time soon.
