Comment: These climate-change protests were declared by young people passionate about their future, but their agenda is misguided

No not misquided this is new generation times has changed we are just old fashioned and out of date.

The necessity of the strike makes their agenda valid.

Both action and protest are needed. They are not mutually exclusive.

You seem to be reasonably well meaning. But you have misconstured the symbolic impact on the body politic and the public generally. You need a more nuanced analysis.

Disagree. This is the only way to impress on our politicians the pressing need to act on climate change. cliamtestrike

Frog shit! Adults are being put on notice by soon-to-be voters that they've had enough of climate change deniers and inaction by 'snouts in trough' pollies. This is their world too and they'll be dealing with our mistakes long after we're gone. Well played young people!

Pfft ... Of course it is on the Gov't to lead because they are going in the opposite direction ... the author doesn't know how engaged these students are in small actions to mitigate. She just assumes they have no idea. I'd give the essay a 'D' for literacy.

When these kids are old enough to vote they won’t be voting LNP

These young people are the hope of the planet. All poeer to them.

The youngsters have comprehensively upstaged the establishment. Wonderful! Sometimes you’ve got to shake the tree to get rids of the nuts.

😂😂😂😂 nice pic

Well articulated

Remember when the SMH was a quality broadsheet?

I believe in climate change but i am happy with the LNP policy of a 26% renewable target. I have seen no evidence that we can manage more. Other countries have plenty of geothermal & hydro we do not We all need to relax,100% renewables is coming. But it will not be solar & wind

This is pitiful.

They had to start somewhere, so they will learn more as they go along and keep thinking, like all teens they need guidance.

One Voice Versus THOUSANDS - raised in Protest - thousands of young people who inspire thousands of older people - and will be voting in the near future

“Get me a 16 year old girl prepared to speak against the Protests” ...

Sorry. But very unfortunately what you say didn't work in the past and won't work today. We do need activists. People who will stand up to be counted.

Piffle

Terrible climate change effects caused by anthropogenic emissions in Northern Territory - oh shucks - NO CHANGE. Prostest that one.🤣😂😜Empirical evidence tells its own story.

Don’t submit this as an essay for your HSC Annalise ... you’ll fail.

Nice try IPA.

Australia is not going to fulfill its commitments. It is going to be part of exacerbating climate change. This means disruption of our economy and deaths of Australians. At the very least could learn the facts.

would benefit from some basic reading in the area.

What a joke

Unfortunately your perspective on the seriousness of climate change is sadly misguided. It is the single most important issue facing humanity. The affects of it are only now becoming obvious & if we all fail to act countries like Australia will become unliveable.

It is very clear what governments must do: replace coal by renewables. It is important that students put pressure on governments. Remember the walks against warming? Where are they now? Politicians do what they like until stopped by the public and voters

Perhaps SMH editorial policy is misguided. The evidence it is, is far stronger.

Nah. This protest is powerful, and much needed after years of lame excuses from fed gov. It's not our job to do gov's homework.

These high-schoolers won't even be able to vote for at least 2 federal elections. The Liberals only need one term on their current course and Australian climate is doomed. The pro-climate-action message is too urgent to leave in the hands of the uninformed; it must be spread now.

No mistake.... :(

I whole heartily disagree with this blog post. How demeaning. 'You must have specific policies before you protest' is a horrible thing to say. The protests are to show they care about action on climate change. It is up to politicians to consult with the experts they have on hand

You are wrong. People must speak truth to power. Or yell if they have to!

the protests which stopped the Vietnam war were far less organized - yet momentum changed public opinion and it forced America to eventually pull out. Sometimes protest is all there is

I’m also an anonymous 16-year-old girl who writes like a 40-year-old liberal party lobbyist

What is misguided is belittling these protests. Listen to these kids now or be ignored when they are grown.

Fair enough. But it’s not one or the other. You can do both. Protest and take tangible action. One does not preclude the other.
