The European Parliament has approved the controversial EU Taxonomy system, which lists gas and nuclear activities as sustainable investments

MEPs voted with a majority of 50 to reject a motion opposing the inclusion of gas and nuclear activities in the Taxonomy, with 33 abstaining.

It will now by up to the European Council to ultimately decide the fate of this proposed Taxonomy, however there are differing views among members state as to whether it should be given the green light. The issue has divided political groupings. Frances Fitzgerald of the European People's Party also backed the current Taxonomy, telling the same programme that it was"naive to say we can get to renewables without continuing to use gas for some period".

Ms O'Sullivan, who has also described the proposed Taxonomy as"green washing" told the programme that"to muddy the water by including gas and nuclear in this system is outrageous".

Ireland will never have nuclear power stations, all the money will be wasted on a rediculous rail link

Any chance RTE would report on the Dutch farmers protest?

This is quite poor reporting . The matter at stake is not whether nuclear and fossil gas are needed for the energy transition, but whether they should have an EU sustainable categorisation. Failure to point to this or challenge misinterpretations is misleading for readers

Utter madness

This is complete insanity. Coming from the same institute that banned carrots for being too bendy. Does this mean then that the Cork gas supply will commence soon.

Sensible decision..Policy of banning gas exploration in EU countries even LNG storage which we did was wrong...Big mistake Germany made was shutting down nuclear power..Thank God for Corrib field supplying 40% of our piped domestic gas this winter...SF campaigned against it...

Gas is not sustainable. When burned it releases, among other gases, CO2.
