Australia's EV uptake is lagging behind the rest of the world, but these tax experts have some reforms that they think would rapidly increase sales.

EVs have also been exempt from toll charges, road taxes and import duties.

Fleet cars bought new are generally re-sold within three to four years at a hefty discount, Dr Mortimer said. The reforms outlined above wouldn't make ICEVs more expensive, but the researchers had some further proposals they described as "contentious". Some managers of large fleets would be willing to pay extra for EVs to meet goals of corporate social responsibility and government leadership, but the current price gap was too wide, he added.Of the 469,000 organisations in Australia with a fleet of more than two cars, only about 1,000 have more than 250 cars in a fleet, Mr Hartley said.More than half of the cars in business fleets belong to just 1,000 organisations.

the silver bullet is to make them diesel powered

Infrastructure

Throw govt money at the problem that’s always the ABC solution. Allow advertising on the ABC so my taxes don’t have to pay to find this rubbish. Electricity grid over east is on its knees how are EV’s going to help that?

And as usual the ABC, perpetuates myths in a country under lockdowns💥 once again. Please!

Price. Way too expensive.

Here come the tax hikes.

Fleet really means car rentals. After a state tax like in Victoria then a general lack of fast charging sites. What tourist would be interested in an EV. Infrastructure first 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

So they can be charged with fossil fuels.......genius

That was not a ‘silver bullet’! Could the slow update in EV because of lack of supply due to Covid, logistic, etc? Tesla waiting time is 9 - 12 months.

Good times ahead for my business.

I’m at my house in the country a 250km drive. No Solar set up and no charging station how do I get home? I’d love a electric car but I can drive here but can’t do the return trip. Sorry I can if I use my fossil fuel power at the house.

DanielAndrewsMP annual tax on EV's

Right - use other people’s money to subsidise EVs. Why is this always the leftist solution?

Twitter headline: The 'silver bullet' that could fix Australia's lagging electric vehicle uptake Actual article headline: Electric vehicles 'could be as cheap as combustion-engine cars' with these tax breaks

. Why are Kia cars a quarter the price of BMW cars? Is it (a) because BMWs are 4x more expensive to make or (b) because that's the price the can charge? Cars cost WHAT PPL ARE WILLING TO PAY. When you provide a subsidy to a luxury, the price of the luxury goes up to match. .

. EVs are powered by COAL. All EVs use energy - public grid energy or sometimes (but rarely) private rooftop solar. But, importantly, when EVs use solar, they are diverting that solar from other uses. Until the grid is green, EVs use coal. No EV is green. They all USE energy.

Where are all the charging stations, big business would need to provide them in their car parks, electrical infrastructure would need to be upgraded, larger cables, transformers etc..

The get 30% subsidies in the UK, one of the few things Bozo did right.

as used to kill werewolves?

I'm buying a horse.

Make tax payers subsidise evs until they are 'competitve'. Then do the same with the coal they run on.

Why can’t EVs stand on their own merit? Why does the tax payer have to fork out for wealthy folks to buy an expensive car a bit cheaper. It’s not middle to low income earners taking them up.

I want to see the govt plans for recycling all the batteries for all this new technology power

Let's make foreign company richer$$$$. Don't we send enough of our profits offshore. Why is western Europe using so much GAS. It's a sales job. Marketing 101 makes you warm inside. .......

No thanks

“600,000 passenger vehicles and light SUVs sold to business fleets in 2020” well the silver bullet is to stop the instant tax write off that causes all those vehicles to manufactured in the first place

Silver bullets are used to kill things, not fix them. Unless you fix whatever it is by killing it, of course...

There isn't enough places to charge them and if you charge them from the grid they're coal powered EV's. Upgrade the grid, upgrade baseload suppliers.

Just a dumb idea from an old soldier but what if electric cars have interchangeable battery packs, similar system as gas bottles drop one off pick up a new one. Probably too easy. Sorry for wasting your time.

ABC are woeful. Whole article written based on the thoughts of a tax expert. A tax expert sees everything as a tax problem. Didn’t bother to speak to fleet buyers?

Disposable Chinese made electric vehicles which retail for less than $10k and last about 3 years.

More coal to generate electricity to charge those electric vehicles.

Whaaaaat corporations need a further tax break to promote this Can’t they already deduct the cost of creating the press releases proclaiming what great corporate citizens they are?

Or governments could just encourage people to consume and waste less? But that would involve decreasing spending and oh no …let’s not end the eternal spending and waste …Exactly!

Delusional.

Reality uncomfortable for many we know

No thanks

You need to build the charging first

Drop the taxes on all cars. We need them for work. And drop the fuel excise while you're at it. The market should drive change, not government.

What a waste

Too expensive to buy, too expensive to run

Why is MEDIA SILENT How does GOVT allow AEMO to grant 18% INCREASE for RETAILERS to charge for essential service knowing that workers only got 5% pay increase? the money saved on petrol won't cover increased costs Elec How will consumers charge their cars with no BASELOAD POWER?

JamesPurtill Along Australia's east coast at present and the foreseeable future, there is not sufficient generating power to accommodate the additional charging demand of EVs. Just look at where electricity prices are going Matt_KeanMP

Our power grid nearly stopped working a month ago.

Or they could increase emissions standards which means manufacturers would be better off selling EVs than ICEVs here to meet those standards, more EVs competing for the Aussie dollar means cheaper EVs.

Translation: The silver bullet is for everyone to pay more in tax to create the illusion that EVs aren't as expensive as they really for large corporations. Now farmers and low income earners who can't afford an EV will pay for the EV fleet of large corporations.

Solution: get some more children from the DR Congo to mine the cobalt for your fossil fuel charged EV's so you can feel like you're saving the planet. No cost is too high, right?

It would be great to have a few options for electric vans. We’re looking at purchasing a van in the next year and I’d like to buy an EV.

More coal powered cars

All we need is tax relief so wealthy people don't have to pay $80,000 but can instead pay $70,000

Solely encouraging the demand side of the equation will not increase supply. Tighter emission standards on manufacturers is required.

Hydrogen cars are the future not electric

Pity we won't have enough energy to charge them let alone keep the lights on.

No mention of the fact EVs are getting more expensive (much more) not cheaper…

I’m so glad we’re now ensuring those poor guys at Tesla and WV get their products to market to their wealthy customers cheaper.

How will they be charged? The poor aren't using electricity because it's too dear and we still can't keep the lights on

'Business fleets are the silver bullet solution to EV uptake” - don’t bother clicking

Electric vehicles are being recharged by fossil fuels. Now GTFOH

Think a bit harder ABC 👍 If countries change to 100% EVs, electrical grids will be unable to cope because 70% of all electricity will be used to charge cars.

Lagging ev sales are a reflection of lagging ev infrastructure. Fix the saddle and people will buy the horse

This won’t do anything to increase the number of EVs available for the Australian market.
