For some time now, flooding has affected some countries in Asia. Last month, Southern China was flooded, and just recently, floods destroyed Bangladesh and India, leaving 41 dead and millions of people homeless. Africa is not left out too because there’s not a single year without a report of flooding. Flooding is the excessive overflow of water in an area where it does not sink into the soil quickly.
In Africa, most countries, including Nigeria, are affected by flooding due to inadequate urban planning. Only a few of the buildings built have properly laid out plans. Some houses are built along water channels without a proper drainage system. Another cause of flooding is the dumping of refuse in water bodies and drainage systems. This leads to the blockage of water, which results eventually in flooding. This act is common in populated environments.
The effects of flooding are devastating to society. Many people have lost their lives to flooding. Flood current, if high, could sweep off a human being from the ground. This eventually leads to the drowning of such an individual. Similarly, flooding destroys properties like roads, cars, schools, offices, and railways. Electronic gadgets, furniture, and other belongings of victims of floods are also damaged in the process.
To ensure the prevention of flooding in our environments, certain steps need to be taken urgently by individuals and the government. Firstly, the construction of houses, factories, and other infrastructures should be approved by the local government department of proper planning. Secondly, a workable drainage system should be put in place so that rainwater can be able to flow freely. Thirdly, the dumping of refuse into drainage systems or water bodies should be stopped.
