Global automaker Stellantis is pouring billions of dollars — a commitment of $8.6 billion so far — into Canada’s nascent electric-vehicle industry and is halfway to its goal of hiring 650 research engineers, said David Buckingham, CEO of FCA Canada.

During keynote remarks June 8 at an Automotive News Canada Congress presentation on The Accelerated EV Revolution, he said the last couple of months have been a whirlwind of activity for the company.

“It’s kind of two projects,” Buckingham said. “One is for product development and the transition to EVs, and the second is purely a battery lab.” The May announcement came on the heels of a joint $5-billion investment in a battery plant in Windsor with partner LG Energy Solution.
