What the Supreme Court's ruling on the 'Clean Air Act' means for carbon emissions

In a 6-3 vote, the conservative-majority court sided in favor of the plaintiffs who brought thecase some seven years ago—primarily a group of Republican state attorneys general who believed that the federal agency was overstepping its authority after it issued a plan to curb power plant emissions. During those years, however, as case was moved through the justice system—rendering the EPA’s plan unenforceable—the power sector’s emissions declined anyway.

The case has a convoluted history, but stems from a policy that former President Barack Obama unveiled back in 2015. Known as the Clean Power Plan, its goal was to reduce power sector emissions from 2005 levels by about a third by 2030. Before the policy could have its day in court, however, a new administration moved in, and, in 2019, then-President Donald Trump repealed the Clean Power Plan entirely. policy, this time from a coalition of predominantly Democratic states.

That momentum may seem great for Biden, but it may not be enough to match his carbon-free agenda. The Energy and Policy Institute noted in

SCOTUS religious fanatics don’t understand who God is. Fact: We all come from the Earth & we all go back to the Earth. There is no other proven God. They have desecrated God the Earth in their action to allow pollution of the Earth. Hypocrites.

EPA ? Environmental = relating to the natural world and the impact of human activity on its condition. Protection = the action of protecting. Agency = an organization established to provide a particular service, an action or intervention, to produce a particular effect/result.

It means we're fucked. Unless we stop the theocratic extremists on the 'supreme' court IMMEDIATELY and reverse all of the damage they just let greedy polluting megacorporations inflict.

SCOTUS currently in the 'dunce' corner - pathetic burst of unhelpful and insidious activity

A win for American energy

It means that congress has to do its job and write laws and be held responsible for their actions. By the people who voted for them.

look at my boobs😘

Especially gun and environmental issues! As a Christian I believe that abortion should be rare. But this USSupremeCourt could care LESS about our precious BABIES 😭 Polluting their lungs, 💗s. Allowing legal, law abiding citizens- before crimes to MASSACRE our kids w guns 😞

We've had thousands of emissions control laws since the 70's. Don't act like Democrats just thought this up.

oh no you mean laws will actually have to be made by the legislative branch? the horror!

BBC: Note the last sentence. The court hasn't completely prevented the EPA from making these regulations in the future - but says that Congress would have to clearly say it authorises this power. And Congress has previously rejected the EPA's proposed carbon limiting programmes.

It means nothing if the court can be successfully ignored.

Another out of touch, insane decision by SCOTUS. Do they not understand we need to reduce CO2 emissions immediately or risk the destruction of a human habitable Earth?

There should be some type of consequences for the actions of the Supreme Court. This country is being destroyed!!!

It means departments of government don't have the authority to create laws. ONLY Congress does!

The stench is growing worse.

The Supreme Court is literally fucking the entire world and seeing this country and everyone in it back to the Stone Age.

Supreme Court is out to destroy the planet just like the GOP

Lmao, emissions are regulated but via the market (the best way) with Carbon credits

Get off your arses and pass some laws.

“One step forward, 15 steps back”

It actually means clean power generation by natural gas power plants, leading into hydrogen fueled electric generation. This content and others. Exporting hydrogen is more efficient than liquefying nat gas and burns cleaner. Abundant and reliable and COULD be cheap w/out the EPA.

Good.

It means the sky is going to fall

It means we're in a JUDICIAL COUP

It needs Congress to act and epa to find new ways to reduce emission. Power sector is moving away from coal with or without new rules. The real danger is in ag
