The global offshore wind industry had a record year in 2021 in terms of new capacity but is still projected to fall short of the International Energy Agency's net zero goals by 2030, a Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) report said on Wednesday.

More giant offshore turbines were installed in 2021 than in any previous year, with 21.1 gigawatts of capacity connected to the grid, the GWEC's 2022 global offshore wind report said.

It also undershoots a much lower 2030 target set by the GWEC with the International Renewable Energy Agency, for 380 GW by 2030, which the GWEC said would require "a gargantuan effort" to meet. Offshore wind remains competitive with fossil fuels, but there is a growing gap between installations and targets, the report said.

GWEC referred to fellow trade group Wind Europe's February calculation that the European Union is on track to install only about half the new wind capacity it needs to reach its target for renewable generation in the power system by 2030.

Nuclear power can help the democratic world achieve energy independenceNuclear power can help the democratic world achieve energy independence, says energy researcher N_Mazzucchi N_Mazzucchi We knew that. Too many invested in oil N_Mazzucchi Sorry but nuclear is ultra expensive, still dependant on geopolitics, extraction, feedstock to plant materials(Russia & China) when H could be extracted in every country/town/village + poss organic electrolyzer/storage(cellulose, lignin etc), granted H is far from local yet.. But N_Mazzucchi Completely agree.

Renewable Energy Is Surging, But Trouble LoomsThe International Energy Agency projects that spending on renewables in 2022 will exceed the record $440 billion invested last year Yet still can't keep the lights on for 365 days a year in California It will only be truly clean if it uses pumped hydro, hydrogen, compressed air etc. The mining/metals/chemicals industries for batteries is an environmental disaster and will provide the fewest net good jobs. Wow. How do you talk about clean energy and oil & gas and fail to mention nuclear? I don’t think we are going to make it on “clean” energy alone. Not to mention the environmental damage caused by vast installations of wind turbines and solar arrays.
