Editorial: After nearly a decade of lost time due to policy paralysis in Canberra, Australia still has a long way to go in its transition to renewable energy. It's time for a serious debate

After meeting this week with the state and territory energy ministers to discuss the blowout in the price of gas, the new federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy,. While Bowen largely kept to the topic, he barely contained his frustration when asked about the Coalition’s advocacy for the introduction of nuclear energy.

Despite Bowen’s exasperation, the debate over the benefits or otherwise of nuclear energy is already bubbling away. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton made that clear when he told ABC Radio National on Monday that he was “not afraid to have a discussion on nuclear”.

In Australia, there have over the years been periodic bursts of debate on whether nuclear power was right for Australia. It has always fizzled out or been rejected by expert advice as too expensive, impractical and unpopular. In the past, with an abundance of coal on hand, it has been politically easier in Australia to support the cheaper and technically simpler option of coal-fired power plants to generate the bulk of baseload electricity.

Even toxic Howard govt. reviewed it and it didn’t stack up. It needs vast quantities of reliable water for cooling, that means near populated areas in this country. Where will it go? Who do you trust to run it? Who’s going to control the cost of this most expensive electricity?

Divert distract and obfuscate are an integral part of the Murdoch party and well supported by wannabees like Warren

Why wouldnt we use nuclear? We store everyones waste uranium here anyways. We get all the bad of it and no benefit

Short memories Chernobyl and Fukushima anyone?

BULLSHIT...STOP THIS MISINFORMATION....THE STATE GOVERNMENTS STOPPED RELIABLE ENERGY....STOP WRITING FICTION

A serious debate? In your rag? Something like “wind is gay, we told it to get out of town”. That kinda thing ?

SMH logic is that waiting a couple of decades to plan, build and bring on line multiple oppressively expensive nuclear power plants is the saviour to todays ever increasing power problems. Seems logical. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Every successful decarbonisation effort has needed Hydro and/or Nuclear. Decarbonizing electricity isn't the full story though. Nuclear can provide carbon free district & industrial heat.

I've come to accept that AU will be a follower, not leader, w/ nuclear. SMRs will be developed and built elsewhere. If and when the price comes down, AU will likely be willing to buy some copies....

There is no transition! gas and coal make up most electricity generated and will do so as long as stupid greens act in the interests of gas and coal to prevent nuclear. We will have to wait until luddite boomer greens finally die off before there are any real reductions in co2

Wind turbines and solar just don't produce enough electricity 100% renewables will never work. Batteries are very resources intensive and expensive. There won't be any meaningful Co2 reductions without nuclear.

You export uranium, yet don’t have reactors. Madness. Build a ton of reactors, topped up with wind & solar. Get it done.

'Let's use Sunbeams&Breezes🦄energy instead.' 'Free Energy for ever.'🤭

We don’t need a debate we need action to build one maybe the tech billionaire and AGL should put there money where their mouth is and Fck construct one and give Australians especially small businesses power to run along with not freezing in winter.

As to whether or not it’s a clever thing to do, heading into TheGreatDepressionII.

False promise from Mr Albo 🤮😢

Costello lackeys attempt to run cover for nearly a decade of LIBERAL PARTY paralysis.

The Nuclear option has to be discussed

Bevan quotes the quigley, cost is prohibitive, his own journo O’Malley reporting nuclear power industry in decline but just because the LNP are banging on about it Shields demands it to be debated. No, the evidence has spoken get on with the shift to renewables and transition.

The 'nuclear debats' is nothing more than right wing wedge nonsense. There are no carbon emissions waste from nuclear power, so it's proponents think they are being so clever. But there is a lot of other kinds of poisonous toxic waste. It too is an old technology

It's abundantly clear that Nuclear power is unaffordable, uninsurable, and no advance payment scheme to fund decommissioning. There are no private investors willing to build them it's a requirement to enact communism in order to build them, only governments can build them.

Just nonsense! Stop wasting even more time on our need to transition. MSM has become increasingly irrelevant to our our lives if not completely irrelevant.

A MATURE debate. Not the usual BS “debate”.

No its not there is no debate. You and your corrupt lnp coalmining mps r lying gaslighting ,& coercing U have lost all ethics

Just because you've never reported on it doesn't mean the debate hasn't already been resolved.

Sorry , Bowenchris is right. The debate on nuclear power is a time wasting diversion from an opposition desperate to find a wedge. The urgent debate we need is how to nationally accelerate technologies for affordable solutions in 2025 not unaffordable ones in 50 years.

No it’s not. The LNP had 9 years & did nothing. Nuclear will take longer, cost more & use up lots of water in comparison to renewables. The data is there. LNP pushing this b.s as a wedge & deflection from their ineptitude

As we speak/read, the Albanese Government are doing just that, are having serious debates about not just this subject but many. Typical SMH, utter nonsense.

So it’s as simple as that at the SMH now, huh? All you need is David Littleproud to randomly mention nuclear power (after doing nothing in that area for a decade) and your editorial team is clamouring to write a fucking editorial piece on needing to have a debate? FMD…

The Sydney Morning Gaslight…

LNP had 9yrs to develop it but didn't so why debate this again now?

This sudden interest of the LNP (and its media sycophants) is a purely cynical exercise designed to a. Have a fee kick at the current Gov't as they know it's unsupportable, and b. Kick the can downbtge road for another 20 years of reports and studies while enritching consultants.

LNP released report on nuclear in 2019. Their own report said no. Nuff said. SMH not what it used to be…..

Nuclear? Hahahaha! Have you seen the costs?

We need a “serious debate” on nuclear power like we need one on whether gravity is real. This debate has been run and won - renewables are the cheapest form of energy, nuclear is the most expensive. No matter how hard you try and polish a turd, it’s still a turd auspol

This is the usual attempt by the Coalition/NewsQorp to control the narrative from Opposition. They do it every time. And the rest of our lazy, compliant media always jump on board. It's pathetic to watch.

Absolute folly, in an island controlled by sun and wind, renewable energy in abundance ! Speed to install new wind farms & solar plants would be quick compared to nuclear power

A massive amount of water is needed to run a nuclear reactor Coal mining/generators consume massive quantities of water too Why's water RARELY discussed in the coal/nuclear vs clean energy debate? 1. 2. 3.

No one reads or listens to your garbage

No. It's not. We are at crisis point and nuclear has been debated over and over and come up short: too expensive, too long. Australia has an abundance of renewable resources. It's time for the govt to put the shoulder into it just as individual consumers have. auspol

9 freaking years of no action. Shut up.

Let's have a pointless debate? Okey doke. Get in the bin. That's the debate over & done with. Next....

FRO with this debate bull. Been there, done that. It's time for action!

If it was viable it.would have been done. 10 year build time and no plan to dispose of waste. It can only be stored. It's dumb and expensive.

Lol. “Canberra” is it now? Call yourselves an independent newspaper- what a joke. 9 years of an incompetent, wasteful, corrupt govt aided and abetted by a compliant MSM. This is on you all.

Don’t need debate. That was what an election is about. It’s time for action.

We are hearing about this debate options for last 15 years, I am sure either party would have pushed 4 either nuclear or gas fired or efficient coal fired power station but they won’t do that as there won’t be any issue on Election Day for them to fooled voters

It's not renewable. Pass.

Too expensive, too slow to market. Debate finished.

9 + years of a nothing Liberal government largely supported by the MSM including the SMH, now all this, take a bow.

All these policy makers and journos crying out against nuclear energy and why it won’t work yet our uranium exports are helping nuclear powers like France meet its energy requirements. An informed debate is needed on this topic even if the eventual answer is no.

The LNP had 9 years in government to debate nuclear, but as they had other measures in place to slow the move to renewable energy they didn't bother. This faux debate is an attempt to continue the anti renewable policy from opposition and as always the media play along.

If it's a good idea as the L-NP mob is now crowing abt, why didn't they promote it while in govt? They went w/ the dud 'gas-led recovery' instead?! 🤷 Has anyone asked them for their policy & cost modelling on that?! 🤷 Stop repeating L-NP agenda uncritically. Auspol

SMH has been either absent or supportive of the LNP that entire time

Canberra in the last 9 years = the inept government formed by the Liberal and National Party. Don’t obscure the truth.

auspol The only ppl who are putting forward the nuclear power option are those with connections to the mining industry. It's ludicrous! Nuclear is expensive polluting & a potential massive health hazard! The waste from it is a problem. Time for a massive alternate energy push!

So now the SMH has decided it's time to transition to renewable energy after 'backing' Morrison and his LNP for the last decade....the media in this country have a lot to answer for.

Even the increment of emissions in China is more than the whole emissions of Australia. How much effect it could be to decrease some emissions here?

Before Trump got elected and it was shelved Bill Gates had negotiated with President Xi of China to build a large scale cutting edge molten metal reactor. He's dying for a stable geo-political place to build one.

So the SMH proposes we further delay action by doing the thing that delays action yet again - debating nuclear power. It’s been debated since the 70s.

this debate isn't serious, is a culture war joke, shame on the media
