A new super department to oversee climate, energy, water and the environment is to be established in Canberra as part of a series of public sector changes to focus on the new government’s priorities.

A new super department focusing on climate, energy and the environment will be created by the Albanese government.

“Reflecting key priorities of the government, the Department of Health will be renamed the Department of Health and Aged Care, and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications will be renamed the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts,” Mr Albanese said.

This is also expected to accelerate the consolidation of key delivery and digital platforms, ending the duplication of technologies across the Australian Public Service. After straddling both Defence and Home Affairs, cybersecurity policy and management now also sits within the Homes Affairs portfolio, to be overseen by Clare O’Neil. The hardening of critical infrastructure, including the internet of things, and the pledge to impose mandatory reporting of cyber breaches and ransomware attack are early proposals requiring attention.
