‘Exploratory talks’ with unions could lead to agreement on approach to improving public services, Martin says

Taoiseach Micheál Martin arrives to attend the second day of the special meeting of the European Council on Ukraine, in Brussels, Belgium. Photograph: Stephanie Lecocq/EPATaoiseach Micheál Martin has warned that high prices for petrol, oil and gas are likely into the future as he welcomed the latest round of European Union sanctions on Russia.

Asked if high prices for oil and gas were here to stay, Mr Martin said: “One is looking at a different era now in pricing for fossil fuels.” Mr Martin did not rule out a windfall tax on energy companies, though he noted that the situation in Ireland was somewhat different from the UK, where a tax was recently announced.

Wrap up well folks, we're gonna be frozen this coming winter, unless your in the minority very high wage brackets!

Cancel VAT on electricity, gas, coal & heating oil, so.

Nothing to do with war in Ukraine. Prices were skyrocketing before that. Excuse for excessive prices at the behest of his World Economic Forum handlers. Martin works against the interests of the Irish people, their children and grandchildren. Vote them out next election.

The Russian Ruble surges and Ireland's economy crumbles remind me who does he work for?

Just another 8 years and you'll own nothing and be happy WEF

I'm all for sticking it to Putin but this just shows we shouldn't have tethered ourselves so tightly to oil when Russia control's so much of it. We should be looking to double down on renewable sources of energy to give us more independence electricity wise.

Aren’t they too high already, how about taxing the bejasus out of Energy companies and pumping that back into infrastructure and subsidized home efficiency efforts; or haven’t ye gotten your fingers into that pie yet…

Paying higher energy prices is worth it to stop Putin. We can’t simply abandon the people of Ukraine, and we need to show that any country that starts an illegal war of aggression will face serious consequences.

... Another Irish politician, that represents the interests of energy corporations, over the people he governs. ... The average price of Diesel in Ireland in 2010 was €1.23 per litre. ... Wake up Irish people, and stop voting for the likes of him... ...

Taoiseach jubilant as he gives all clear to energy providers to gouge the ar$e out of us. All smoke and mirrors, EU is buying and will continue to buy RF gas paid for with rubles.

200% increase in the price of living for the great unwashed....YEAH, cool, take that Russia🙄

The plebs will have to tighten there belts while the elite get fatter.

So they sanction Russia and punish there own ? Stupidity at it’s best

EU missed climate spending target - auditorsThe European Union missed its target to spend 20% of its pre-2020 budget on fighting climate change and overstated its green spending to claim that the goal had been met, the European Court of Auditors has said. it calls into question everything being reported from the EU. This entire entity has failed and created some unachievable goals in order to inflate their budgets. Corruption at the highest level. Ask the cold and hungry people how much more 'climate' tax should be paid.
