Our national economic prosperity is underpinned by the world’s growing appetite for raw materials and energy that not only feed traditional uses, but assist with transitioning the global economy.
It might seem like renewables’ share of global energy has been growing at a rapid rate but it’s still small. Despite the dollars diverted into this enterprise , renewables account for just 6 per cent of global energy – about 12 per cent if you throw in hydropower.This gives you some idea about the scale of investment needed to replace energy supply from traditional sources – the ones that are the subject of various campaigns to be eliminated.
It will also make it infinitely harder for those countries committed to a lower emissions future to actually get there.“Net zero emissions” doesn’t mean “no emissions”, so let’s be smarter about how we tackle the decarbonisation challenge. There is a preference in popular discourse for certain types of technology solutions over others. Technology is evolving rapidly but we Australians should be agnostic as to which solutions are the beneficiaries of our available funding.
Yes because the world should have transitioned 20 years ago but the fossil fuel industry spent billions denying climate science and now we have to play catch up , also end the subsidies for fossil fuel and spend it renewable energy.
