OPINION: Renewable power is a long way from picking up the world’s energy load. Until it does, coal must still have a role.

Our national economic prosperity is underpinned by the world’s growing appetite for raw materials and energy that not only feed traditional uses, but assist with transitioning the global economy.

It might seem like renewables’ share of global energy has been growing at a rapid rate but it’s still small. Despite the dollars diverted into this enterprise , renewables account for just 6 per cent of global energy – about 12 per cent if you throw in hydropower. This gives you some idea about the scale of investment needed to replace energy supply from traditional sources – the ones that are the subject of various campaigns to be eliminated.

It will also make it infinitely harder for those countries committed to a lower emissions future to actually get there.“Net zero emissions” doesn’t mean “no emissions”, so let’s be smarter about how we tackle the decarbonisation challenge. There is a preference in popular discourse for certain types of technology solutions over others. Technology is evolving rapidly but we Australians should be agnostic as to which solutions are the beneficiaries of our available funding.

Gillard tried that and got smashed. Where was the loud and credible voice of industry when she was being abused by Abbot, Credlin and co? Because They'd much rather spend your money then their profits which sort of makes this whole green new deal untenable because somebody has to pay more He'd better hurry up and buy some poles and wires. Pipelines are so yesterday.
