Today, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said the government would come forward with legislation within weeks which would suspend parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol.But the prospect of an imminent conflagration appears remote.

He called on Conservative MPs to join Labour in supporting the"fair and principled measure" which he said has support from business, trade unions and the"overwhelming majority of the public". "We absolutely understand the EU's position but we disagree with their assessment of the protocol and how to address it," Boris Johnson's spokesman told journalists at a regular Westminster briefing this afternoon.
