The world's first electric container ship is set to be inaugurated during a ceremony in Brevik today | Read more:

The launch of the fully electric and autonomous container vessel Yara Birkeland will take place in the town of Telemark, with Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway, attending the ceremony.

Initially, the ship will start a two-year trial to become autonomous and certified as an autonomous, fully electric container vessel. With the aim of reducing diesel-powered truck haulage by 40,000 journeys a year, Yara Birkeland will reduce NOx and CO2 emissions, improve road safety, reduce road dust formation and reduce traffic noise while transporting fertilizer from Yara’s factory in Porsgrunn, Norway to the export port in Brevik, Norway, according to technology company KONGSBERG.

The autonomous bit is the more scary part.

'With the aim of reducing diesel-powered truck haulage by 40,000 journeys a year, Yara Birkeland will reduce NOx (Nitrogen oxide) and CO2 emissions, improve road safety, reduce road dust formation and reduce traffic noise...'. May all her journeys be safe.

Can you imagine the impact of this ship on the environment ?

It's funny that RTE never questions the amount of flights into Ireland. RTE never questions when Leo uses the states jet to fly to England.

A contrainer ship? 🤔

It’s completely autonomous too. It doesn’t need a crew onboard.

Where does it get it's charge from? It is using the ocean movement somehow?

Where's the charger
