Your body prefers to run at a speed that helps conserve calories, a new study says. Running with music might help you overcome that natural tendency.

Runners competed in a race near Marathon, Fla., this month.When people set out to run several miles, you might assume they would run more slowly than if they were planning on running only a mile or so. But a new study upends long-held beliefs about running by suggesting that runners default to a natural pace that burns the fewest calories regardless of the distance they cover.

“We are programmed to conserve our energy,” said Scott Delp, a Stanford University professor of mechanical engineering and bioengineering and a co-author of , published Thursday in the journal Current Biology. “Because back when humans were first evolving a bipedal gait, it might have been a long time before we could eat again.”
