The nation has 43 pumped storage facilities with a combined capacity of 22 gigawatts, the output of that many nuclear plants.

that got a license five years ago needs a utility to operate the plant and buy its storage capacity before construction starts.“The permitting process is crazy,” Malcolm Woolf, president of thecomplained during a January hearing of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, saying it involves too many agencies.

Pumped storage dates from the early 1930s. But most systems were built decades later to warehouse excess electricity from nuclear plants and release it when needed. But the study didn't examine whether sites would meet environmental or cultural protection standards or be commercially viable. Its website acknowledged, “Many or even most ... may prove to be unsuitable."

The facility could power nearly 500,000 homes for up to 12 hours, according to Rye Development, spearheading the project. It's seeking FERC licensing and is scheduled to go online in 2028 but still needs a state water quality permit.

The Renewable-Energy Revolution Will Need Renewable StorageWe usually think about renewable energy in terms of its sources, such as wind turbines and solar panels. But that’s only half the picture—we also need renewable storage. We think about supplying energy in terms of city demands, but cities are outmoded by modern communications, meaning populations can be decentralized more now than ever before. In theory, a decentralized population would be a a source, not a demand. Sure, hydroelectric is water falling by gravity through turbines, and steam rises, meaning you could use water in a cycle, water down, steam up. Also hydrogen fuel cells break water down into base elements, hydrogen rises and is a combustion fuel when ignited back to water. It's all basic math and science, but let's be realistic, the purpose is to control the population, make it dependent for profiteering sake, genuine sustainability would defeat that purpose, we aren't looking for sustainable energy, we are looking for sustainable business.
