On na hOileain Árainn , off Co Galway, many energy consumers have been taking action over recent years to insulate homes, getting rid of oil fired central heating, putting solar panels on their roofs and using electric vehicles. On a breezy damp day ar na hOileain Árainn, Dara Ó Maoildhia drives along in his electric car.
Mr Ó Maoildhia says 300 properties out of 500 on the Inis Mór, Inis Meáin and Inis Oirr have now had some sort of energy upgrade since the co-op was set up ten years ago; ranging from internal and external insulation, air to water and geothermal heat pumps, as well as the most visible sign of energy upgrades as you drive around Inis Mór - roof top solar panels.
"If we as a community could own our own energy supply, by generating it ourselves through a wind turbine for example, then we could sell at whatever price we set.
I like the idea of an energy co-op, don't know why there aren't more of them, it seems to work well for the Aran Islanders.

Isn't it grand that some Irish people can afford to do this ...
Well done about time
Such bitterness in the comments. Renewables need to be the norm, not the exception.
Renewables + storage = reduced fuel imports.
Easy enough to have an electric car on a tiny island - a neighbour has a heat pump and first 2 electric bills were €450 per bill over twice his usual.
Who paid for them to live energy independent, me, I did through carbon tax, but yet I'm in arrears.
FFFGG Propaganda network..🤦♂️
Another short promo for government policy, which can easily be identified by the lack of a '€' symbol in the text.
