For more than half a century, Liddell Power Station in the NSW Hunter Valley has burnt coal to power homes and industries. The turbine switched off today is equal to taking 400,000 cars off the roadToday, AGL is shutting down the first of four turbines, signalling the beginning of the end for the ageing plant.
AGL says today's unit closure will deliver a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking about 400,000 cars off the road."But it's also reflecting that this power station is quite old, efficiency is not where it should be when you compare it with modern power stations."Liddell opened in 1971 and at one point was the most powerful generating station in Australia.that will house a grid-scale battery, solar thermal storage, wind, hydrogen and pumped hydro.
The Chinese will restart it when the take over shortly
Mothball it just in case
shit.
By 2050, the world will be throwing out 2 million tons of wind turbines and 6 million tons of solar panels every year. One reason the world may be throwing away so much not-so-renewable waste is that recycling it costs ten times as much as what is recovered.
Hope we've got all those big batteries built in time made from metals mined by poverty stricken peasants in third world countries...
Has anyone got stats on the 'efficiency to pollution' ratio in coal fired power stations?
