Industry experts warn that taxpayers are being exposed to big financial risks when governments own energy plants.

The new Labor team wants a 200 megawatt power plant, an electrolyser and a 3600 tonne storage facility built by early 2026. The exact site will be determined by a panel of experts within the next 90 days.

“We are going to have a commission of inquiry that will advise the government of the best way to do that, that is both expeditious and provides for a smooth transition and also delivers the right outcome by South Australian taxpayers,” Mr Malinauskas said. Mr Mullighan said the process for choosing a specific site for the hydrogen plant at Whyalla had been outlined, with the expert panel having 90 days to recommend the best location. The SA Liberals warned weeks ago the real cost of the hydrogen plant was likely to be closer to $1.2 billion.
