Soaring gas prices push more Canadians to consider purchasing electric vehicles

“Gas prices are a big reason why I'm considering switching my relatively new sport utility vehicle for an electric one,” he said in an interview.

Joanna Kyriazis, program manager of clean transportation for Clean Energy Canada at Simon Fraser University, says EV drivers can insulate their wallets from geopolitically driven fossil fuel price swings such as what we're seeing as a result of the war in Ukraine. Cost can still pose a deterrent. A new electric vehicle in Canada ranges between $32,000 and $160,000. At-home charging stations are an additional upfront payment and range from $300 to $700. When parts and labour are tacked on, that can add another $1,200 to $2,000.

“It doesn't take very long, sometimes just a year or two, before fuel savings make your EV cheaper than your gas car,” she said. The steeper price tag does not worry Molaei. It is Canada's lack of infrastructure for EVs that he is concerned about, like making it easier for people to charge their vehicles at home overnight.

Bullshit

What? I do not think so

I can't wait until these EVs run into problems and people come right back to internal combustion

I’d get an ev if; there was a rebate for buying one thanks fordnation for that one 👎🏻 that way EVs would be in line with other midsize suvs. Since range is significantly reduced in winter, id only consider a Tesla model Y long range and its 85k, or +30k compared to ICE options.

Done with gas this year. Couldn’t be happier!

Don't forget fordnation got rid of all rebates in Ontario. Vote for a better future. VoteFordOut2022

I love the idea but my fairly new explorer is paid off. For me to switch to a new electric that can do what my explorer does almost daily (tow, fit 2 kids and 2 big dogs, go long distance north) I’d have to spend over 100k. I wish I can own an EV and a GV.

What happens to the battery after 10 years , very expensive to replace , is it recyclable,

all pland!

No, do not buy electric. So called 'Green energy' is a lie.

Not me. I'll stick to my truck as much longer as I can, after that I won't even be able to afford a EV. Just a couple years and you'll see that EV. Won't be cheap to maintain either.

Regency bias. Also force bike prices up a few years ago

I want a PolestarCars 😍

I smell bull here, if you can afford gas, can you afford an electric vehicle $ 80k ? Plus home charger ? Cp24 you need to work harder on your stories

How can poor people afford these cars ? People living cheque to cheque? They can’t

BS Poll

I can afford a lot of gas at these prices and higher b4 I can justify spending the price for electric vehicle.

Do some research on the battery needs and disposal for electric cars. Not as environmentally friendly as you'd like to believe.

EVs will cost more!

Coincidence?

No not really. While they may be feasible for some, they just won’t work for others.

I'd get an EV today if there was more 2 charging ports in the whole city I live in lol. Infrastructure was totally stopped by Douglas 👎

The problem with EV cars is their Power Cell. Generally its $3k-$20k to replace it & there is NO Guarantee how long the power cell will last. But Honda says 10-20yrs on their NEW clarity models. If I was Premier I would make Honda warranty the Power cell/Battery for 10-20yrs.

Many cannot afford to replace their cars.

Carbon tax starts ----------------- April 1, 2022 that will ADD another ------------ approx. $0.11 PER litre to gas pump price .

That's not true people can't afford to buy these electric cars stop spending fake news

Soaring gas prices have me walking more and shopping real close to home, like don't need ttc close.

Kathy73921688 Bring back rebates in Ontario.

Is this a con to sell more EV'S ? How nuch to recharge them ? As opposed to gas price ?

New models of vehicle will still continue with traditional automotive supplier chains (stampings, gas engine) until 2030. It will take decade to switch to electric vehicles completely.

Lmao ain’t nobody deciding whether or not to scrap their 2017 Honda CR-V or 2015 Toyota RaV 4 for a 70k electric vehicle lmao

Stop the cap

I call bullshit.

That’s the whole game plan

I thought about it. But then with some quick math, EV car up front cost too high and gas car still cheaper with high gas prices. Plus no EV right now other than Tesla is appealing. So the up front cost is far too high. Would take decades of gas savings to even out the overall $$.

And remember... March 2008 Gas: $3.23 a gallon Oil: $104.54 a barrel March 2022 Gas: $4.32 a gallon Oil: $95.75 a barrel Don't cite inflation instead cite the OIL & GAS appetite for your wallet!

Where to charge?

Electric? Screw that ill keep my V8 powered mustang thanks.

The WEF is destroying this planet not cars. Todays ICE engines run so clean it’s basically water vapour that comes out. Wait till they add a road tax to our electric bills, we haven’t seen nothing yet! Keep drinking the kool -aid people, Klaus Schwab will thank you!

No way

Should put huge flags on aging inefficient pickup trucks the bitch about gas prices. Already doing that? Cool. Cool.

3 years all electric no problems. More than worth it.

Our government needs to give incentives for cars and charging stations

No not really.

And where are they going to get the minimum of $60000

Of course it’s part of their plan. They’re goal is to not sell combustion engine cars by 2030. Gas prices going up isn’t a coincidence, they are just using the war to have something to blame it on

Wasn’t that the whole point of artificially inflating gas prices? And the overarching 2030 sustainable goals agenda?

I hope the government implement better deal for EV buyer.

The good news for everyone is this, more EV vehicles means less demand. Those with gas vehicles should then expect lower fuel prices, lower food prices lower everything. So if you hate EVs don't get one but root for others to get one.

Bahaha

Why isn't it mandatory for Canadian towns and cities to synchronise their traffic lights? In my home town the standard seems to be to drive from a green light to the next that goes red as you get there - constant stopping & starting needlessly slurps gas.

Should read, Controlled gas hikes are forcing people to buy electric vehicles.

Can’t rely on fossil fuel forever

Lol just wait till you realize you gotta pay for charging haha

fordnation got rid of a huge chunk of the charging stations, but sure, it good if you live in a city, don't commute much, and have the extra $$ 🤦🏼‍♀️

Unless batteries can stand and last in extremely cold weather, I will stay with gas in Canada.

The free ride of driving an electric vehicle on the roads without contributing to the costs for the road maintenance should end soon it’s got to be paid for somehow instead of just the gas powered vehicles

Buying an electric car! As soon as everyone starts buying Electric cars watch the price of electricity go up. Supply and demand. What a scam!

THIS IS HOW PEOPLE WITH ECARS FEEL WHEN THEY SEE THE gasprices 😂😂😂😂😂

Would like to take the bus but expensive and unreliable TTChelps JustTransition needed

Consider - sure Then we look at the price tag and move on Thanks Doug. Who needs EV rebates ?

because the average Joe can afford $76,000 for a Mach E from Ford🤣🤣🤣

There is a nine month wait. It will be longer if more orders come in. Plus hydro will increase mark my word.

It is time for Federal and Ontario government to give maximum tax credit for electric vehicles. They should also invest in more charging stations on highways.

this exactly what they wanted y’all to do. 🤦🏾‍♀️

aaand electric vehicle prices just went up…

Canadian winters reminding Canadians to stick with gas powered vehicles …

Horses would be better option

Hydro not any cheaper

Unless you get yourself into more debt to buy $65k+ car

Canadians suck at math.

Can't plug in at my apartment building?

Finally. Every problem is an opportunity.

Maybe slower driving on the highway and smoother acceleration from 0 to 50 km/h in town would help too. But 99% people don’t think about these two simple things u can do to save gas.

So to save on gas they are buying $80,000 vehicles? Lol

Imagine if our infrastructure wasn’t designed for only cars but we had actually put in proper public transit options like other better countries have.

“Soaring gas prices push more “Upper-Class Canadians” to consider purchasing electric vehicles while Middle and Lower Class Canadians continue to struggle due to low income rates and inflation” Fixed it for you.

So… hydro one get richer instead of the gas companies… Tomatoe/tomato

Oh yes let’s believe the media they never lie Somehow people have this extra money to buy an electric car but complain about high gas prices

Ah, no.

I bought my first ev 10 years ago. There were so many naysayers making up issues. But the cars just worked no issues we have also taken trip across the country and into the US no issues finding chargers and it didn’t take that much more to get to where we were going.

Bullshit when are you guys going to talk about how all these batteries are going to be recycled? You can’t and no company can! What they going to do bury them?

I’m not against EVs. I will gladly buy one when it becomes practical and economical

Until the grid collapses or gets hacked

Nope I could never drive home to see my family without a charge. I'd pay the extra $$ for gas before I'd buy an electric car.

For all of you that think that all EVs start at $70k here is one of the latest from Hyundai with a base of just over $45k and qualifies for the $5k rebate.

1 yr waiting period

I spoke with EV owners. It’s a fantasy EV will solve high energy costs. Likely it will cost more with many inconveniences, such as range loss in cold climates.

Plastic water bottle meet the electric vehicle 🐑

🙄🤪

LOLOL can’t afford gas but can somehow afford a brand new electric vehicle?!?

How about a comfortable new pair of shoes made for walking lol

The new 'let the eat cake'....

Lol worried about paying an extra 10 dollars, but are ok with spending on an electric car that's more expensive and not cheap to install a charging system in there garage! This blows my mind

Because if you can't afford gas, you can afford a Tesla.... also can we actually see some apples to apples comparison for cost comparison? how much does it cost either vehicle to travel 100km?

Owning an EV means you never have to drive by the sign outside the gas station and worry about what price you might see

No, I have 5 year old car. Why do I need to buy a new EV ?

Logic: I can't afford gas but I can afford 60k EV? Ok.

Not really clean energy batteries don’t last forever need to use other means to produce the electricity we have brown outs already from overuse in summers what’s really going on?

Grand Caravan is 45K, any electric car starts 90K. No thanks, I'll stick with fossil fuel.

Too bad that 1. Our power grid can't handle the extra load on electricity. 2. Not ideal for rural people or long commuters. 3. Can't get in a condo our townhouse. 4. Electric cars have a larger carbon footprint globally

Its also a good time to sell as my car is worth the same amount I paid for it 3 years ago

Good, the more people move to EV, the lower the demand for gasoline which will then lower the price at the pumps.

I can’t afford $2/l so I have to get myself a $60k electric vehicle and update the hydro at my house so I can start saving some $$$$$.

Reverse-Robin Hood....tax the middle class so much that there are only two types of people left - those on government support and those with a trust-fund...

Forsure! Let’s go buy an 80k electrical car. So tone deaf. Libs live in a fairy tale world

Fake news again

I have an EV and a hybrid coming in the next few months. They will decrease our gas consumption by 80% and monthly costs by around $250. Very excited!

Proof? The cars are 70 k, who the fuck has that for a feasible car purchase.

So what they can’t tax on Electricity the same way 🤣💀
