Opinion: California energy projects needn't encroach on wild lands [Opinion]

We need to rethink our strategy for energy projects. We need to put solar panels on existing rooftops and place battery storage along existing transmission corridors. Sighting these projects in existing built-up areas that are easily connected to the current grid systems will allow us to keep our natural areas intact to help mitigate global climate problems.

Once we remove the natural vegetation to install energy projects, the plant and animal habitat is destroyed forever and cannot be replaced. The existing natural plant communities will do a much better job to absorb heat and carbon dioxide and produce oxygen through respiration. There will be less soil erosion in sensitive desert and mountain areas, which will help with water retention and aquifer replenishment.Advertisement
