CAR magazine reveals details of Hyundai's plans to make an Ioniq 5 N electric hot hatch

► It'll be the brand's first e-hot hatch

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 might be one of the most striking cars on the road today, and soon it’ll have the performance to match. We’ve got new spy shots that show a sportier version of the Ioniq 5 N testing, and they once again confirm Hyundai is working on a faster version of its sci-fi electric crossover.

The pictures follow intel and a batch of previous spy shots – but once again show an Ioniq 5 being put through its paces. Look at the lower ride height and low-profile tyres, and you can tell this isn’t just another Ioniq 5. Expect flared wheel arches and a more aggressive bumpers on the production version. Additionally, this model also has the ‘never just drive’ associated with Hyundai’s N division.

Executives have already been stress-testing the e-GMP platform during its development process, reaching eye-popping power outputs. Albert Biermann, chassis wizard and head of R&D for Hyundai Motor Group, told CAR in 2020 that the platform 'will go almost up to 600 horsepower in certain models.'There are currently no rumours in regards to power, but we’re expecting it to borrow the 580bhp-ish configuration from the pricier more powerful Kia EV6.

Hyundai's been experimenting with high-performance electric cars for years, the most recent iteration being the RM20e. It's not a racing car, but a rolling test bed for new technologies destined to end up in future production cars. Some elements within N division regard the 'racing midship' demo car as the catalyst for a super-powerful halo car for the performance brand in the years to come.
