On a barren lava plateau in Iceland stands an entirely new kind of industrial facility that sucks carbon dioxide from the air and traps it in stone. So, are they part of the solution to climate change?

With DAC, there's a much lower risk of leakage, Professor Howden said.

That's still a lot more expensive than offsetting CO2 by planting trees, which costs as little as $US20 per tonne. So who's paying Climeworks a premium for DAC offsets? Energy giant Santos struck a deal with CSIRO last November to trial the government agency's new DAC technology in South Australia.

How many trees is it equivalent to?

Why is the ABC promoting this pointless, harebrained idea. What is needed is immediate and drastic cuts to the production of CO2, not some useless device, it's a distraction.

Almost a joke. Burn more mostly carbon intensive energy supplies to remove token marginal amounts of carbon out of the atmosphere. Does anyone really fall for this?

Err, they're called trees.

You know plants do that for free, right?

Call me crazy, but anyone else think it’s weird the CO2 comes out of the ground and then they try and put it back into the ground? How about leaving it in the ground and make electricity another way? Done, sorted?

Love the way idiots think if we bury the CO2 it'll just go away.

CO2 is plant food

Wow

Been around for a while. Most don't work. The few that do work are so expensive, they are not a realistic option.

Another white elephant. Algae bioreactors probably more efficient.

Don’t trees do this? Couldn’t we just plant fuckloads of trees instead of cutting them down?

We already have excellent prototypes. They are called ‘trees’. Pity we keep cutting them down for the enrichment of property developers & antediluvian farmers.

We Simply Should 🇦🇺💪

How could we possibly? We no longer manufacture anything here.

What are they? Trees?

From the article: DAC takes a lot of energy, so increasingly that will be sourced from renewables. WTAF. Consume a lot of energy to capture CO2 which is an unwanted byproduct of energy consumption. This remains a dangerous distraction.

Just plant some fucking trees

Pretty pointless, as long as China and India belch out their ever increasing volumes.

You wouldn't start draining the tub before you shut off the water.

🌳 Plant more trees. 🌳

Monocotyledon 'scrubber' prototypes from an unevenly distributed future.

🤣 No. Not until after May that is 😜

They'll work about as well as holding your breath.

Giant machines that remove CO2 from the atmosphere are finally here.

Crazy stuff

Carbon capture conversion to a useful resource such as bricks is a great idea instead of injecting into the earth. Hope they're not toxic like fibro asbestos turned out to be. Still in our urban landscape like poisonous bombs.

We already have them, they're called trees.

Then what? Where does it go? If the Greens weren't insane, they would advocate nuclear energy so the otherwise waste heat could be put to use processing such things, as well as chemical production & industrial processes, for example.

'DAC takes a lot of energy, so increasingly that will be sourced from renewables.' Why the hell are we building this? It will be cheaper and more efficient to displace carbon emissions with renewables than to emit the carbon and pay twice again to claw it back.

Another DAC company ... plans to use captured CO2 as an input to make carbon-neutral synthetic fuels that can substitute for diesel, petrol, or jet fuel Capture the carbon to make fuel? NOT carbon-neutral then, plus energy-intensive!! Do you read what you write?

I fracking hope so.

How about some trees ?

Until I see a complete energy balance this idea remains a distraction. Fans, compressors, materials take energy to run, so unless the CO2 captured has value then it is unlikely to be a game changer...ever.

Their called trees.

Don’t look like a tree 🌳

Alternatively, we can grow them, and stop cutting down the ones we already have.

What they’re going to grow trees?

All well and good. But most significant part of the article - 'we need a [significant] price on carbon'. So, zero chance with a Liberal or Labor govt!

I've got a few of these in my backyard. They're called trees.

Trees have been doing that for millennia. Humans are hopeless.

Much easier not to put it in the atmosphere in the first place.

This model has been improving over the last few years and is certainly a better option than hoping humans willchange their behaviour

You know a better way to reduce CO2? How about we stop burning coal? CCS doesn't work.

Go away with this crap.

Can't we just plant more trees?

Why not plant trees?

Why not stop producing co2

Tiny comparing to the forest we chop down every day

They are called trees

All the push for planting trees overlooks one thing. Trees are like a dam. They can only store so much. Then they become neutral. New trees simply replace old trees Or in Dam terminology overflow Warragamba dam

The worlds biggest in Iceland only take out 800 cars worth a year, what will you do with the co2 after anyway?

Sure why not heaps of room

This is a waste of taxpayers money

We don’t build anything in australia. We import it from China.

Good idea, starve the plants.

There's these things called trees right and they........... You know what, nevwrmind

You could plant trees and stop deforestation..

Sure! Your Lord and Saviour ScottyFromPhotoOps could easily arrange kickbacks for his criminal affiliates to build them. But he won't be Crime Minister much longer, so we'd have to ask our caretaker PM AlboMP if AustralianLabor will prioritise this.

Carbon Capture & STORAGE should be called Carbon Capture & RELEASE CO2 must remain buried for 10,000 years to avoid impacts on climate. But dilute acid formed by stored CO2 dissolves in water present in reservoir rocks, corrodes the rocks & lets the CO2 escape upwards auspol

Its interesting that there is zero real data on the performance of the proof of concept. Ignoring capital costs what is the energy cost to have 1 tonne of liquid CO2collected and delivered to 'storage' including process chemicals. Sounds like spin to me

Misses the whole fixing & storing carbon chemically. Fossil fuels are old trees & biomass fixed as near pure carbon ... derr. How long until you saturate your rock storage.

no but someone else cld build them for us and place them in one of our quarries

It's an expensive diversion from the compete inaction of the LNP.

Yep, we ‘build’ lots of trees here in Australia.

What the actual: 'DAC is currently prohibitively expensive, mainly due to the cost of energy' 'DAC would need to be enormously scaled up to be useful.' In other words it's not a solution leaveitintheground

Could? Should!

Yeah, we should try everything, no matter how inefficient and ineffective, as long as it doesn't impact big petrochem's profits.

We need to focus on not making things worse (I.e. ban fossil fuels) rather than be brainwashed by coal industry 'we can pollute then clean up the mess' propaganda.

Build something like this in Aus? Only if it lines LNP mates pockets if this Federal Govt remains in power. We need a change of govt to boost manufacturing in Aus.
