The country’s largest property groups are at odds over plans to upgrade energy standards in new housing.

Australia’s largest property industry groups are at odds over plans to update the National Construction Code to impose higher energy efficiency standards on new residential buildings.

“What we want is a clear path of reasonable changes flagged well in advance and we believe the proposed NCC changes meet this test.”But the push faces resistance from the Housing Industry Association, which represents large volume builders of low-rise homes and whose members already risk a “” in the face of surging materials and labour costs from higher demand and supply chain disruptions.

They need to agree on new standards for them to be incorporated into the new iteration of the building code that comes into effect later this year. The Property Council, along with Green Building Council of Australia, not-for-profit Energy Efficiency Council and Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council say this overstates the costs of higher standards and underestimates the savings.used “best practice” methodology and “more accurate assumptions” it would find the planned changes would lead to a net benefit for society.
