Buyers of electric cars in South Australia will soon be charged for every kilometre they drive, after an electric vehicle tax was passed.

Electric car buyers in South Australia will soon be charged for every kilometre they drive, with the state joining New South Wales and Victoria in adopting electric vehicle taxes.Owners of any other electric vehicles will be charged an indexed fee of 2.5 cents per kilometre

In order to secure its passage, the government offered some short-term sweeteners, including a three-year registration fee exemption for new electric vehicles, and a $3,000 subsidy for the first 7,000 electric vehicles sold. The bill will also establish a parliamentary committee to examine the rollout of electric vehicles. The new tax will come into effect in July 2027, or when electric vehicles make up 30 per cent of the market, whichever is earliest.

"And we're going to have to have a mechanism which funds the maintenance and replacement of our road network, because fuel excise will completely disappear."Opponents of the new tax said its passage would slow the state's ambition to be a national leader of electric vehicle uptake. "Our research shows the EV package in South Australia falls well short of what is being offered by the SA government's Coalition counterparts in New South Wales."The Labor opposition said the passage of the bill days before the Glasgow Climate Change Conference sent the wrong message.

As we will be sending our solar energy overseas for quality refinement first, and that costs money

Because electric cars use road infrastructure too and someone needs to pay for it

please ... all the inner city latte sipping lefties please go and buy EVs .. the more there are the cheaper fuel will become ...

Bugger! If the lights go out.

sagovau What justification/explanation is there for taxing electric vehicles?

This is just stupidity and greed. The fuel excise isn't even collected by the state government. If they are going to do this it should be for all vehicles. Perhaps it's time to trade in my EV for the biggest, nastiest (and soon to be cheaper to run) V8 I can find.

Price of fuel rising due to suspension of fossil fuel investment loans means many will want to switch over to EV faster than anyone expect. It isn't even the LNP decision, the abandonment of fossil fuels is starting in US EU at a fast pace like it or not.

In China if you buy an electric car you get a ¥30000 rebate & there are electric charging stations in homes & every apartment block! Once again Government are gouging & taxing people who are being environmentally responsible! AustraliaGoneToTheDogs OverTaxed Greed Gluttony

W T F ! ! ! Green incentive = Z E R O !

We do well in the manufacturing of trucks and buses 🚌 but there’s no car industry left except for the second hand car industry and the Government should be seen to encourage people towards EV with a genuine recycle program of old cars 🤓🌎🤓

eWaste

Goverments in this country really don't want EV's to catch on, do they?

Backward thinking until we have a greater percentage of EVs Bring in road user charges on all vehicles now if you are concerned about road funding
