Alberta Premier Jason Kenney expressed concern within hours of Guilbeault’s appointment as environment minister on Tuesday

In legislation from the last Parliament, the government promised five-year plans for regular declines in carbon emissions, eventually getting Canada to net zero by 2050.Article content

“His own personal background and track record on these issues suggest somebody who is more of an absolutist than a pragmatist when it comes to finding solutions,” he said.Article content Guilbeault said the government has been clear about its plan, with a carbon tax that will gradually rise to $170 per tonne by 2030. He said he does not intend to limit new oil and gas projects directly, because production is a provincial responsibility, but he will put hard limits on pollution.Article content

“What we heard during the election campaign is that Canadians from coast to coast to coast want governments, not just the federal government, all governments, to do more in the fight against climate change,” said Guilbeault.
