TOKYO :Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said on Thursday he expects consumer prices to start climbing again on rising energy costs, indicating global inflationary pressure is spreading even to a country long struggling to shake off deflation risk.

"Core consumer inflation is hovering around 0per cent but we expect it to turn slightly positive reflecting rising energy prices," Kuroda told a quarterly meeting of the BOJ's regional branch managers. Kuroda maintained his optimistic view on the economy, saying it is likely to recover as the pandemic's damage fades thanks to robust external demand and massive fiscal and monetary support.
