To avoid the worst consequences of climate change — worsening extreme weather, irreversible ecosystem shifts, loss of life and economic hardship — scientists say the world must limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The only way to do that, they say, is by making deep cuts to fossil fuel emissions.

New research quantifies exactly what it would take: keeping a vast majority of Earth's remaining fossil fuels tucked underground.on Wednesday, found that nearly 60% of the planet's remaining oil and natural gas and 90% of its coal reserves should remain in the ground by 2050, underscoring that most regions around the world must reach peak fossil fuel production now or within the next decade to avoid the critical climate threshold.

Scientists have already said that only by making rapid, severe cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, while simultaneously removing carbon from the atmosphere, can we halt the precipitous warming trend. The authors also noted that their findings may be an underestimate, since their model doesn't consider future Earth system feedbacks, nor does it take into account underlying uncertainties around the deployment of technologies needed to curb emissions.

Oil and gas production, according to the study, need to decline by 3% each year until 2050 to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, signalling severe implications for producers who are banking on continued profits from fossil fuel production. The study makes one thing clear: fossil fuel investments made today risk being stranded in the future as the climate changes.

Scientists say that needs to change immediately. The countries with the largest fossil fuel reserves have the largest global influence to limit climate change. Canada, for example, has a much higher reserve — 83% — that needs to remain in the ground by 2050 than other regions. "We have known since we've signed up for the Paris Agreement in 2015, that this means we have to stop burning fossil fuels by mid century," she said. "For six years, we have known the logical consequence is that there are loads of fossil fuels that would not be able to extract. It's really good that the paper shows so clearly what, in very practical terms, this really means.

did those protesters use a vehicle of any kind to get to the protest spot? I rest my case

Crack addicts what do you know

Idiots!

There are other industries that are worse….

Ya sure we will use oil from other countries. Now that make sense not . Make them rich . As they prices of fuel go up . Stupid Canada

I think we should get bows, move north and be like Jeremiah Johnson.

Yeah who needs oil based products 😂 that stupid platic mask

Well it’s cheaper to buy a gas job than an ev Cripes whom can afford a car mortgage let alone a house mortgage

We are taxed . And Trudeau gives 144 million to China for coal plants

It took the experts this long to figure this out Holy fuck the human race is fucked!!!

Good luck with that! The less Canada extracts the more everybody else does!

Yeah, well, you first. We need fossil fuels to live and will for the foreseeable future. Try a little balance in your reporting. Consult real experts, e.g., engineers, physicists, people who understand how things work, instead of eco zealots and green ideologues exclusively.

With this type of coverage it’s understandable Trudeau is slipping at the polls! Certainly sounds great but let’s not stop all workings! Trump should be helping Canada and be involved with Afghanistan and the Taliban

Must be why the British fired up the coal plants.

No problem. Everyone go back to living in a cave and fighting off starvation. And we need to lose about six billion people to go to pre industrial population levels. Do we have six billion volunteers?

Without fossil fuels, you can’t create green energy.

Fossil fuels We are literally relying on death for energy

It's buggy whip technology, time to move on.

Never going to happen

Do you know your politicians? Are you aware which politician is responsible for the area that you live in? Download ‘Rippel App’. Find us on App store and google play store.

CTVAtlantic sell your SUV , stop heating your home , no more pave on roads , no more truck carrying groceries etc . stop all genetors and power grids . oh no more dams that produce electirc they kill natures . ah hell stop living

If only there was a way for people to stop using fossil fuels… but in the meantime, while we try and figure that out, let’s blame the companies that make them available to us. 🙄

Why is everything promoted by fringe lunatics news to you guys?

Realistically, it will be up to the consumer. The producer just meets the demand of the consumer.

I’ll pay for a one way flight for this guy to bring his sign to China.

Buy long underwear now. Has anyone calculated how many will die in the North Frigid Zone, the North Temperate Zone, the South Frigid Zone, and the South Temperate Zone?

Animals are 'shape shifting' in response to climate changeSome warm-blooded animals are experiencing shifts in their body shapes, likely as a response to the pressures of climate change, according to a new review of existing research. You mean evolve, kinda line evolution, kinda like what all species including humans have been doing for millions of years. If you want people to believe in climate change then don't post this nonsense.
