BySen. Bernie Sanders on Sunday said he wouldn't support the bipartisan infrastructure bill if it included measures such as raising the gas tax or a fee on electric vehicles.
"If it is roads and bridges, yeah, of course we need to do that and I support that," Sanders said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "If it is regressive taxation — you know, raising the gas tax or a fee on electric vehicles, or the privatization of infrastructure, no I wouldn’t support it, but we don’t have the details right now."that costs about $973 billion over five years or $1.2 trillion over eight.
"What is in the bipartisan bill in terms of spending is, from what I can see, mostly good," Sanders said. "One of the concerns that I do have about the bipartisan bill is how they are going to pay for their proposals, and they're not clear yet. I don't know that they even know yet, but some of the speculation is raising a gas tax, which I don't support, a fee on electric vehicles, privatization of infrastructure, those are proposals that I would not support.
"It is time we paid attention to the needs of working people," Sanders said. "And when we do that, when we deal with climate, when we deal with infrastructure, when we deal with home health care, when we deal with child care, we can create millions of good-paying job, that is what the American people want. That's what we've got to do."
I hate politics
Tax bullets, guns and churches… especially churches that get involved in politics.
Somewhere Ted Kennedy is weeping at the short-sighted ignorance of the left wing. They’ll hand McConnell the cudgel to beat them with in ‘22 rather than pass bipartisan legislation they can refine & build on over time - something Kennedy understood, that everyone else forgot.
Fees are usually taxes in disguise. GOP really embraced adding fees and pushing costly services down to counties and local gov. about 20 years ago. Similar to some Universities “claiming” not to raise tuition yet disproportionately adding and increasing fees. Fees are taxes.
Bernie is right!
Absolutely should raise the gas tax
I agree. Raising gas tax is the wrong move. There is bipartisan support for raising taxes on the rich and big businesses
So once again nothing will get down and the reason is none of them ever planned too.
Tax the corporations and billionaires that haven't paid their fair share to help build the roads and bridges of this country that they use every day to make their profits. The wear and tear they put on our infrastructure is vastly greater than the average person
Sen_JoeManchin A gas tax impacts low income people the most. Come on, people! You have to do better than that!
We have existed as a democracy for many years but that durability is despite not because of our binary system. If there were more options, we could have more imaginative laws and more coalitions that would help all factions.
