The time is fast approaching when many people may see owning and driving their own car as akin to pounding out words on a typewriter, writes Daniel Yergin

Governments are also driving the shift. California has banned selling gasoline cars in the state after 2035, and Britain is aiming for 2030. China will allow only electrics or hybrids to be sold starting in 2035, and the Biden administration’s giant new infrastructure bill includes $174 billion to support electric cars—50% more than for bridges and roads. Just this week, the U.S.

One of AutoTech’s three constituent parts isn’t actually new. In 1900, there were more electric cars on New York City streets than gasoline cars. Thomas Edison put much money and effort, plus his personal prestige, into developing his electrics, but Henry Ford’s gasoline-powered Model T won the competition.

Electrics counted for 3% of total cars sold world-wide in 2020, but, as Mr. Burns puts it, “something has tipped.” That something is money. Auto companies are now piling new investment into EVs. Electric cars are easier to build, because they are less complex and have far fewer parts.America’s love affair with the car will turn into more of a hookup, with the convenience of a utility. But it is not just the relative simplicity of EVs that is impelling the auto companies.

What these ride-hailing companies offer is not a vehicle as a product but rather mobility as a service—a car only when you want it, not when it is spending much of the time sitting in a garage or parking lot. They offer the possibility of not having to buy a car in order to have the regular convenience of a car.

I wonder how the oil industry feels? I’m rooting for GM to deliver!

Excellent article! Electric cars are the future, because they are better and cheaper to maintain. Self driving cars, should sound the alarms, for retraining our workforce from now.

Robotic cars will save thousands of lives per year and massively decrease commute times. I get being a bit spooked, but you’re not thinking it through if you trust humans more than computers when it comes to driving.

Can we get some 21st century rail like civilized people here, ffs?

New York’s former World Trade Center (WTC) is the World Transportation Center (WTC) A new, ever-expanding, universal infrastructural system that guides & propels driverless cars will emanate from “Ground Zero” in Manhattan The word “Phoenix“ occurs in the text of Nostradamus

we never know how the future is reserved.. electric might or might not become a sensation

In the future streets will be jammed with offices. 4 backed up to one another=company meeting. 2 backed up to each other=customer meeting. Work from your home office that just happens to drive away.

My biggest concern is if something goes wrong with autopilot, who will be responsible? The manufacturer or the driver of the car?

Electric cars are also environmentally friendly and are becoming more popular

elonmusk this is a must read

You have lost your minds? Ever driven back roads from one place to another(?) These pipe dreams simply don’t work in rural America which (wake up call) is MOST of America.

No it's not ... not yet ... Oil reserve is good for another 200 years and the Oil tycoons won't let it happen that easily ...

Soykırım kelimesini ağzına alacak dünyadaki son devlet Amerika olmalı. Zira Kızılderililer'e ve Afrika yerlilerine yaptıkları soykırım tarihin en acı en utanılacak zalimlikleriyle doludur.

great

I’m sure rideshares will be all the rage in rural areas. You going to Denver? Well in 3 weeks, someone that lives 42 minutes away from you is going to Denver too. Looks like a 3.5 hour round trip drive. Don’t worry though, even if it’s time consuming your carbon footprints tiny

I love driving and cars with combustion engines are the best

Own nothing and you’ll be happy? Rolls 👀

Keep dreaming, this article is fantasy

Well that’s a pretty lame comparison seeing as how everything still has a keyboard..........

I agree

This assumes everyone lives in a city?

I’ll pay the bills of the first 5 people to dm me.
