With interest in clean energy surging — President Biden’s infrastructure plan calls for $174 billion in investment in the electric vehicle industry and a goal of reaching 100 percent “carbon-pollution free power” by 2035 — trailblazers in the green revolution are getting richer. There are now 34 billionaires whose fortunes stem from clean energy products, ranging from electric scooters and electric trucks to solar panels and wind turbines.
The wealthiest clean energy billionaire is Tesla chief Elon Musk, who was briefly the world’s richest person in early 2021 as shares of his electric vehicle maker reached new heights. The eccentric South African native is running into trouble once again, as federal investigators are looking into a Model S car crash in Texas; local authorities reportedly believe the car was operating on autopilot at the time of the accident.
Besides Musk, there are seven other electric vehicle billionaires, many of whom saw their companies go public in the past year. The most recent is Denis Sverdlov’s Arrival, which listed on the Nasdaq in March via a merger with a special purpose acquisition company . A Georgian born Russian citizen, who now lives in London, Sverdlov founded Arrival in 2015. The firm is developing zero-emission vans and buses, and aims to start production of its first vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2021.
