It comes after figures released to Sinn Féin TD Darren O'Rourke show that there were 37 collisions involving electric scooters so far this year.Electric scooters have become increasingly popular among commuters in recent years, but the law prohibits their use on public roads.
"Over the last number of days, especially with the level five restrictions, we've noticed an increase in the number of phone calls ... understandably that's going to increase with the Christmas period coming," he told RTÉ's This Week programme. Marty Meany, an electric scooter owner, who stopped using his scooter after being cautioned by gardaí last year said: "Electric scooters are already on the roads in their thousands, the correct term to use is 'the horse has bolted' because they're already out there.Opposition parties too say it is time for the law to catch up with public demand.
"Government appreciates the importance of regulating this new sector as a matter of urgency and work is under way in this regard.
Who’s calling for it? The insurers looking to line their pockets

It is time that legislation was put in place to allow these climate friendly scooters use on our public roads or on designated lanes. Users should be obliged to wear safety helmets & the scooters should have proper lighting .
They are popular but many use v irresponsibly especially in Dublin. Should be subject to tax, insurance & rules of the road & not use wherever they like. Accident waiting to happen..like to think I’m wrong but from what I see as lethal as kids on quads. GardaTraffic BobFlavin
Call for a tax schedule u fucking mean
Maybe if you just started recording adults using these, once they see how ridiculous they look, they'll likely lose interest.
Head injuries continue to rise with these death traps!
I've been hit by one coming up behind me on the pavement.
Why are there no headlines regarding the 100,000 signatures petitioning for RepealTheSeal and the public outcry over the decision to seal the records of Mother and Baby homes for 30 yrs? Is there an ordered media blackout and only reporting of a tiny Red C poll allowed?
Why is the Garda attacking the Irish people ? Are you reporting on that .
Forgot it’s 2015
