When tech entrepreneur Mike Cannon-Brookes heard Scott Morrison challenge the private sector to come up with an alternative to a new gas-fired power station yesterday, he called up Elon Musk.

Australian billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes says he is ready to meet the Prime Minister's energy challenge to supply cheap dispatchable power but he does not want to do it using gas.Prime Minister Scott Morrison says 1,000 megawatts of new power is needed to keep energy prices low

The two discussed a challenge laid down yesterday by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who said the energy industry would need to come up with a way to generate 1,000 megawatts of power or else the Government would pursue a gas-fired power station. The Federal Government is worried unless it is replaced, there will not be enough dispatchable power being generated and prices could rise.

"I'm basically saying that we need to transition [to renewables] in an affordable way with reliable energy supply," he said.

He should think this over. There is an inherit problem with renewables. That's dipachability and availability.

The whole idea was to build reliable energy, not un environmental energy that wastes land and is extremely toxic.

And all down without government subsidies.

Cute stunt but gigwatts of solar panels still produce no power at night, huge wind farms still need wind and battery banks need to be replaced regularly. You can have renewables or reliables.

cant happen

How much subsidy from the tax payer does this billionaire smell? I’m all for it if he gambles his money alone. I’d wager he’d lose more than he’d gain.

how many shares has he got ?

Here's the thing about renewable energies... we're on our way, yes, but we're not there yet. There's a lot more research and tech required. I believe we'll get there one day, but it's still a way off. In the meantime, oil, gas, and coal are proven. Stick with them.

Build a nuclear power plant. Get a hair cut and stop looking like a yobo slob then Australians might like you.

Does he have gas?

Wind failed 11 times in just one month The entire annual battery production from Tesla would provide the nation about 8 minutes of power

I’d love to see his blue print design and technology. Then consider the cost of manufacturing his design and the raw materials and energy used to make it.

This guy paid tax yet?

What does he care

Why not include him? Since the unelected Mr Gas, Nev Power, has the Governments ear. And weirdly..wants a taxpayer funded gas plant.

I can also solve our energy problems. Just replace coal fire stations with nuclear power stations.

Snake oil

If SA did make it why not in NSW as well? Hoping for affordable batteries for our home. we support renewable energy! Go for it!

Both sides are right, Australians are paying far to much for Electricity and have been for a long long time. We do need t switch to renewables. But I hope that the real need, an affordable power supply for the Australian people is not lost in this debate.

What alternative ? you cant beat the laws of physics,no matter how many dollars you have.

Awesome

Well done Mike! Let’s get the market to decide the energy source.

Sorry, u can't mcannonbrookes. If we shift to renewables how will the COALition & fossil fuel diggers survive to infinity? ScottMorrisonMP LiberalAus The_Nationals

YES.... FKN YES!! Own it

WE tried that. FAIL

I have honestly never heard of this guy.

Mike is the God-King of rent-seekers - do anything for enough of your money.

5151mpk Baaaaaahaaaaaaa More money than brains..

With his own money or using Goverment Subsidies?

Tesla tower & free energy is much better & safer than this

It’s interesting, that those who have tech ability either spend their life in the basement or make a fortune. If they fail we laugh as they sit in the basement. If they succeed then suddenly they’re the oracle of wisdom & we should pay attention. Hilarious.

Over this. I worked for a gas coy. They paid $1billion and approx 4 years to build for offshore gas rig, FPSO and onshore plant. Receive $10M/mth in sales and staff of around 20. Worth the investment ? Renewables will be faster and more cost efficient.

Australia is less than 1.3 percent of global C02 emissions.. and that INCLUDES the emissions from the coal that we export to other countries... why dont we focus on China whose emissions are more than double the rest of the world combined..

mcannonbrookes if you’re looking for investors I’m sure there are a lot of people who would kick in for this.

Let me guess, the government pays him unlimited subsidies, and the taxpayer picks up the bill

Well done Mike.

ABC needs to read responses to your rubbish. Australians seeing Common sense and not rich kids with ridiculous ideas.

We don't need his rubbish. Please look at California and article in Financial Review this week. Renewables need Baseload power, not rich idiots doubling electricity prices.

Gadgets_S_J Well at least someone is forwarding looking, sure ain’t our PM. 🤬

How about he start paying taxes in this country?

the politicians won't like it as many may be indirectly be funded by mining and banking industry who may dictate their policies.

And so the Climate Nazis at the ABC continue their campaign for renewables

Easiest way for him to become a millionaire...

Go on then No subsidies And baseload is a must

NORTAG_Media 1. What keeps PV on when the sun goes down? 2. What keeps Wind Turbines spinning when the wind stops? 3. How many rivers are suitable for Pumped Hydro in reality? 4. Mega Batteries are totally unrealistic financially & operationally? 5. Hydrogen doesn't exist? ...Coal,NG until?

Good luck. I doubt sustainable, consistent and cost effective baseload can be achieved with renewables. It will be a big challenge.

Where’s the laugh react?

Golden opportunity for ScottMorrisonMP to show he isn't owned by the fossil fuel multinationals. Not holding my breath.

Ok dhead

Oh dear not one but two red flags here. (1) this is in main stream media (2) he is friends with corrupt nutter Elon Musk who wants to put chips in your head .

Fine Demonstrate that it is possible, without any subsidies And that the cost, with batteries/storage is competitive

Gas is the way to go for a few years then a few new coal plants...........renewables? Trying to get government subsidies and still charge families top dollar. Greenies and their bullshit, don't yous love them.

Go for it. No subsidies tho. Renewables are very cheap and highly profitable according to the left.

Good! Sensible man. Start investing your millions

Why is the Federal Government doing the work of the NSW Government? scottyfrommarketing should stick to his knitting.

m_mann1 Brilliant ScottyFromMarketing gets someone else to do the job (as usual) having created the diversion away from his useless, leaderless rabble of incompetents; MSM immediately lack onto Labor;what they are going to do?(wedge achieved) and CrimeMinister goes back to bed auspol

our gov is just no different to Africa n PNG they only listen to us if a millionaire grease the monkeys in Canb

good on you but they dont listen to you UNLESS you are a big donor As little as $50k they would become your pet poodles

Same dude who pays his staff to go protesting and a China suck job! payedcommercial defund

If he wants a voice in this country, he needs to run for office instead of expecting everyone to listen to him just because he’s rich.

Says the gronk who refuses to pay tax in Australia

Needs to bribe a few pollies to catch up with the fossil fuel fossils

He reminds me of Lyle Lanley.

He needs a shave and a haircut and even then I don't care what he thinks.

He should go for it without any government grants or subsidies.

Australian billionaire who also pays no tax. Fixed it for you.

Gas is for money hungry grubs

Nuclear generated electricity is affordable, reliable, clean, but most importantly, cheap! Why wait 10 years for a plant to be built and come on-line, build it NOW!

I want billions in free government money to make the project viable...

Our govt sinks billions for lobbyists, the Opposition is silent, and billionaires rattle sabres on energy policy - we're living in a dystopia.

I’m sure he won’t be putting his hand out for government money & will pay for these renewables investments out of his own pocket.

So why doesn’t the government ask for tenders? Because they want gas cause their cronies make the money

Just go nuclear

Sounds reminiscent of the scams and deals made by Eddy Obied. Governments happy to do deals with their wealthy private masters.

This whole look is peak tech billionaire

He clearly has no concept on what base load energy requirements are...

Anyone looking to billionaires to solve climate change is delusional

We don't need technically ignorant billionaires that want subsidies to their investment from hardworking taxpayers. Solar and Wind that cannot generate the power to produce and install them. ClimateEmergency is a Fraud to make us pay 15% more tax for nothing! GO AWAY!

Thankyou

Lost me at Elon Musk

Doubt the PM likes this sort of challenge to his view?

Me thinks, computer geeks should stick with the computers

That's the very same renewables he'll be applying taxpayer subsidies for. Not that TheirABC would tell you that.

What happens when said 'renewables' reach their 20 year shelf life? I sincerely hope that they are completely recyclable and 'renewable'? Oh wait.......

When billionaires do this it's them wanting tax breaks

is he able to use the non subsidized renewables and he might know the real cost. Also the Australian made ones so we don't have to support the Chinese economy.

Go for it. In saying that what ever form of generation you use must generate power 24/7 👍👍👍

Dude has the $. Go for it!

A wind farm on his private beach maybe? Anyway, it'd be nice if Atlassian could pay some tax.

Once was a billionaire.....

This clown can power the ABC, the rest of us want cheap reliable coal.

Um, did he not read the ‘reliable’ requirement.

Morrison will never agree to it. He’ll end up looking like the dumb, visionless dinosaur that he is.

Also take 20-30 years and cost an obscene amount of money

How much does he want us to put in?

Morrison said he was only joking

Glad this billionaire looks ordinary, makes me feel better.

Maybe Atlassian should try paying income tax first

He sb next pm.
