Diane Francis: Canada and the U.S. should ban all oil imports from OPEC, Saudi Arabia, Russia and form their own energy pact dianefrancis1

Canada and the United States should join forces by banning all oil imports from Saudi Arabia, Russia and other OPEC countries and replace it with oil produced right here in North America.

COVID-19 has revealed the danger of relying on foreign supply chains, whether it be for masks or commodities The oil price collapse was triggered by a 30 per cent decline in demand due to the coronavirus lockdowns, but was worsened when Saudi Arabia flooded the market with oil. This was part of its long-term strategy to drive the higher-cost shale and oilsands industries out of business, so Saudi Arabia can hold us to ransom once more.

A bit OTT but the right idea. If Trump weren’t such a dick head the west could present a unified view in favour of free enterprise.

Excellent.

Looks like a plan

But what about the liberals who would rather send billions to Saudi Arabia than Alberta? No one from Alberta will pay them off like Saudi does

Is about time

I guess if you want gas $2 per liter, you can do that.

Yes please. Also all pharmaceuticals etc manufacturing in North America

Good luck. Quebec doesn't want Alberta's 'dirty oil', but they have no problem with oil from Saudi Arabia.

Like so many ideas of Diane’s, this makes so much sense. But will probably go unheeded. Canada needs to be much more self-sufficient in all things.

IMO, with the USA in bed with SaudiArabia, Russia and heavily reliant on China & it’s products, Trump & administration will do nothing to upset them. The POTUS does not hold a high opinion of Trudeau & administration. We’re more a door mat. What pact can we get?

Or, you could use a higher, sliding carbon tax to create a domestic floor for oil prices. That would allow higher cost domestic firms to survive, reduce the demand for cheaper imported oil and reduce overall demand over time to address climate change. 1/2

OrangePowly Trudeau hates Canadian oil.

We have reached the end of globalization, and maybe that is a good thing!

So yes this. Treat oil like eggs or milk but at a North America level.

Makes too much sense for Canada a energy rich county to supply our own needs and not be left at the mercy of foreign companies and government.

Let’s remove the competition in order to increase profits. Let the population foot the bill, as usual. Brilliant plan. Let’s sacrifice the commoners for the benefit of the rich and corporations. That is what conservatives peddle.

Yup!

Yes and No . Biggest problem was also the USA . They regulate the prices in North America. Also Alberta oil is not refine . You figure they would build lot more refineries . To sell a higher grade product 🤔

Like 10 years ago!

Then no kick do not forget

So dumb as oil corps control imports not government

Who cares what another American mouthpiece has to say.

Albertans have been saying this for years. Every dollar we use to buy foreign oil. Is a dollar we export out of the Canadian economy.

Good idea from Diane Francis on Canada & US forming their own energy pact.

What about the free market, capitalism, do we cancel the pipeline we are currently building to the west coast. Haven't heard any comments from CAPP stating this is a good idea.

There should be an energy corridor across Canada. Just like the railroad in the 1800's which was considered a nation building project. This could be considered the price provinces pay for equalization payments. It should include pipelines and electrical transmission lines.

Except that you can’t rely on the US. We have seen that with other things. Never should we be reliant on just one country for something. They could elect an idiot as leader.

ElectTories YES!!!

Then we would make it official that the usna controls Canadian resources

Now why has no one thought of that before...

That's the best idea I've heard in a long time

I think you'll find Canada has signed many trade deals which would not allow us to do that.

Been saying this for years

You’re shitting me? The 3rd largest oil reserves on Earth should use it to their advantage? Crazy talk..you sure Justin would approve?

That would make too much sense and JustinTrudeau would make his dictator buddies mad who he cares more about that the average Canadian. People here are stupid saying Alberta oil is dirty yet will buy from Saudi where they kill you if you are gay and beat women. How liberal 🙄

Quebec is running the country. Never gonna happen. They prefer oil from countries that mutilate women.

Yes, been saying the same. Set price at 60 and no buying foreign oil allowed. Done !

Only when the USA becomes a reliable ally again, once Trump has been cleansed from office.

Could have a Texas tea domino effect, banning this that & the other thing, that thems feeding to put in Diane's global shopping cart.

Canada has voted to not support our natural resource industry so we will be a slave to foreign oil for a long time, USA companies are abandoning Canada for some strange reason 😂

That would be a smart move, not something the Liberals would do.

Too few understand EROEI-energy returned on energy invested. Bitumen and shale are very, very energy intensive, the returns to scale are 3:2/3:1 for bitumen and 6:1 for shale, the Saudi's light sweet crude is 30:1 for some wells and 12:1 for others, 🇺🇸🇨🇦oil is expensive.

How about just Canada.

Definitely! This is a great idea.

Justin loves Middle East oil. Never going to change.

Agree!🇨🇦🇺🇸

Petro Canada you fool

Correct. Canada has the second largest oil reserves in the world. We should ask more for oil. Not less.

dianefrancis1 Yesssss!!!

dianefrancis1 PeterMacKay Right on!

dianefrancis1 Canada can't even agree to a fair trade deal outside of oil and gas with the US, how well do you think energy deals will work out? I mean, are we getting paid for the electricity and water we ship down there right now?

dianefrancis1 They will out price you anyway you go - closing us off to markets in Europe and Asia. Our oil is too costly - an oligopoly will just make the process of easing off oil a little less painful.

dianefrancis1 Are water is worth more?

dianefrancis1 Why doesn’t the National Post write an in-depth article on the % of ownership of all the NA Energy Companies? People would be shocked on how much of NA is owned and controlled by the Middle-East and the Russians!

dianefrancis1 Do you think that’s going to happen while the Saudi’s, Russians and other OPEC nations control (own) much of our key industries in NA? Great idea but ... your dreaming In Technicolor!

dianefrancis1 At least tax the shit out of it.

dianefrancis1 About time somebody brought this to the forefront. Let’s save thousands of jobs in Alberta & other prov time repay Alberta & other provinces jkenney JustinTrudeau

dianefrancis1 Someone tried this with the National Energy Program if I recall. I also recall that the energy companies and cons went ape shit. Why do it now?

dianefrancis1 Hello? This thing in? Why does the US need Canada at all?

dianefrancis1 Great article. A very good idea!

dianefrancis1 The NP standing up for 'free' enterprise 🤣

dianefrancis1 All imports should be banned until domestic sources are tapped out. That would require more pipelines. No party, including and surprisingly the Conservatives, seem prepared to take up that mantle. Now would be a good time?

dianefrancis1 Fuck being dragged down with any oil based economies...now more than ever is the time to invest green!

dianefrancis1 Correct

dianefrancis1 Do we have the Energy East pipeline ready to substitute the oil imported from Saudi?

dianefrancis1 Will create good jobs building and operating refineries as well.

dianefrancis1 Good Idea.

dianefrancis1 It’s insane that Canada has the oil it has, blocks itself from producing it on environmental cause despite being the most responsible oil and gas producer in the world but gets tankers from the worst places on earth with no concern for what environmental impact it has. Use ours

dianefrancis1 Sorry European NATO Allies, Diane says you’re on your own.

dianefrancis1 Establishing a N.A. supply strategy for O&G is long overdue. OPEC has been manipulating the global markets for a generation or so and often to our detriment. We have enough of the resource for our needs. Time for energy independence!

dianefrancis1 Trump would never agree. They don’t want any refineries in Canada so they can exploit Canadian oil. That’s why Harper never built any refineries he was too scared

dianefrancis1 That is long overdue.

dianefrancis1 Intriguing idea but you’re dreaming because Butts is puppeteering Libs anti oil & gas movement with his greenite imported activists & $$. He’s aligned with UN global agenda...Nothing Positive will happen in Cda until Libs removed from power and cleaning the corruption begins...

dianefrancis1 While we're at it let's ban all investment from Russia and SA, and demand proof of lawful provenance of funds for assets already held in Canada.

dianefrancis1 Saudi Govt. has just executed massive defence contract. We can’t take arbitrary actions

dianefrancis1 This is a wet dream.

dianefrancis1 Should happen!

dianefrancis1 Wow ... your late to the party but at least your here now. 👍

dianefrancis1 You mean AB & the US because Kenney, NOT Ottawa, has been working on this for months. Team Trudeau has been busy undermining our economy for 5 years. Now they give $9B to students for 176,000 jobs & $1.7B to protect 800,000 jobs. They deserve zero credit for anything, only scorn

dianefrancis1 Canada should never import oil. There is zero need to do it.

dianefrancis1 We will call it NAPEC!

dianefrancis1 DONE!

dianefrancis1 Makes far too much sense...that’s why it won’t get done. Put heavy tariff on foreign oil that way you don’t ban foreign oil and if they do import the country raises revenue

dianefrancis1 As Canada exports majority of its all.. how are Canadians supposed to get gas

dianefrancis1 I agree, OPEC has too much power over NA economies

dianefrancis1 I don't think Diane understands energy returned on energy invested. Bitumen and shale are very, very energy intensive, the returns to scale are 3:2/3:1 for bitumen and 6:1 for shale, the Saudi's light sweet crude is 30:1 for some wells and 12:1 for others, 🇨🇦🇺🇸 oil is expensives

dianefrancis1 Please run for PM of Canada!

dianefrancis1 Should have happened a long time ago.

dianefrancis1 Canada should immediately ban oil imports ?

dianefrancis1 Soooooo raise the price of gasoline?

I wonder what will happen with the market then. Market value will drop even more because the value of the stock is even lower. Correct? Any dividend cuts and suspensions should start with management and board of directors.
