Some say you aren’t really driving a car unless you're driving a stick shift. But the manual transmission is dying out. Watch the full video here:

But the manual transmission is dying out.

Carmakers say the demand for manual transmissions has fallen off a cliff, adding that there may come a day when very few, if any, cars even offer a stick shift. But automatics were also derided for their inability to shift as precisely as a good old stick shift.

That applies to Jeeps for sure😂

if you want a car that's hard to operate, buy a steam car or horse. 👍

Why stick shift? We can't drive without stick shift?

In my opinion, cars are going auto driving. That's what we get with electric car.

Electric cars don't have a manual transmission, all cars will be electric soon. Do the math, as you say in the USA.

Not in the UK. Americans are lazy drivers.

Yet the most expensive car is a manual, the McClaren F1

Is it happening in Europe? I know it’s in US since most people don’t drive it due to traffic. Most people don’t even know how to drive one.

95% only bad news(

Technology moves forward and some people stay behind.

I am stick guy

I will only drive stick. Dying out That’s just indicative of how pussy we are ;)

what ever some said that are absolute idiot's.

WHO DRIVES A STICK? IT'S 2021

Soon we don't need driver license any more. Self driving. I'm just sitting on the side. Ha..... Ha.... Cool mam

I still enjoy manual transmission 🤛

Manual transmission is dying out because with computer technology there's literally no point in manual transmission. The only people who disagree are macho men who think they can outdrive a computer.

EV.

Democrats illegal after the money for climate change only interested in the money to buy election first climate last they did the same with mega super fund clean water all the money illegally spent on layers breaking the law.democrats like Hillary

Automatic transmissions are a lot more sophisticated these days and can be optimized for racing. EVs don't need them at all.

So much so you won’t even need a steering wheel soon 😂😁😁😁😁

If you have enough power stick is irrelevant.

I haven't had one for 20 years or so - but at one point I had a work truck that had '3 on the Tree' - Google that one - I lived it 😅

Way more fun driving a stick. Reason for disappearing stick, automatic transmission more fuel efficient, with more gears now days. Eventually most cars will be EV which have 1 gear trannies.

Just laziness to drive a stick for some, or lack of know how

England: 🗿

Automatic comes in handy when you are in a traffic jam. It would literally take hours if the traffic is severe enough. I think that is the reason why automatic is the most relevant in this era. People that live in the city nowadays would agree with me.

I had to get an automatic. That 5 speed was getting me into all kinds of trouble.

Everyone should learn. Every woman in my life I taught them how to drive stick. It could save your life one day BeckyQuick

Good friend attempted valiantly to teach me to drive a stick. He gave up in exasperation. Then his girlfriend -- heart of gold and the patience of Job -- tried. Mission not accomplished.

The lady in the video is absurd. That's like saying I hate playing chess but you never learned.

I will only drive one. Slim pickings. Especially on a budget. If people would just learn, they will see it is a far more enjoyable way to drive.

thanks

You aren’t really talking to someone on the phone unless it’s a rotary.

This isn’t hard, and I’m sorry if you disagree, but you can’t shift more effectively or efficiently than the computer.

Millenial Kryptonite

wow

Damn thing always got in the way of sex in the front seat

Was just lamenting this “reality” the other day. Learned on a Fire Engine Red ‘66 Mustang. My dad’s (RIP). As time goes on you realize how much he trusted his teaching ability to let ANYONE, let alone a teenager, drive his car. Thanks, Dad!

Modern transmissions are faster but there is nothing better then shifting from second to third, third to forth, on your terms. Manual transmissions may be declining but resale values for a true sports car experience are only going up.

I learned on a 5 on the floor Barracuda- on hills! With no power steering! My boyfriend was an engineer 🙄

thank you very much for your work

Am I the only millenial who loves to drive with a stick shift? Driving with a stick shift feels real than an automatic.

MOMMY LIKES

Is this headline from 2006?

this is terrible news

I can't find a new BMW with a stick sad ,

Cant go on ur phone as much w a stick shift maybe we should go back to it

Manual transmissions should die off. I've never seen worse drivers than those driving a manual transmission.

thank you very much for your work

Only in us people can’t drive manual

Some say you aren’t really tweeting unless you tweet the same story at least ten times.

As much as I love them, manual transmissions are not much more than a millennial antitheft device…

In an era where people can legally drink and be gooned on weed to some level, the LAST thing I want to see in a car is THE COMPLEXITY OF MANUAL TRANSMISSION. (And isn't it FEWER than 2 percent ?)

Hmm . . . I've still got one

I think you meant say the transmission is dying out...

Probably won’t be missed.

You buy what your given. Further automation of mechanical driving will continue.

Future is automatic.

But, with the ways things are going, those teaching kids how to drive dont know how to drive a standard. Sad.

The stick shift is the anti-theft device of the 21st century.

Thats right! Extra shifting for the 4X4, dont forget. 💞💞💞

If americans knew how to drive they would enjoy it.

MediaPropagandaPromotesViolence MediaLiesInciteInsurrection

Love my two manual transmission vehicles: 1998 Dodge 1500 and 2007 Chevy Cobalt.

Never owned an automatic. What’s the point?

Transmissions are too expensive, how is the cost justified

I prefer a manual transmission but could not find an AWD SUV last time I was looking for a used vehicle to purchase. The Cooper Mini has a nice newer model that is available in a manual.

A manual gearbox is the ultimate anti-theft device.

If you want something difficult to drive, try a Trabant 🤪👇

That's it, I have seen this article like 20 times the last 6 months and I feel personally attacked for driving a manual car lmao

It’s far too tough to eat, drink coffee, text, check weather, search for directions and apply makeup all at the same time while driving stick.

In Europe stick shifts are much more common. That’s what I heard? Electric cars don’t have transmissions. Yay!

We have four cars, and all but one is millennial proof stickshift ChevyBelaire3ontheTree

People should be forced to drive stick. They'd be forced to be aware of what they're doing when they drive.

I still drive a stick shift in the winter. Love it feels nostalgic

Well,in America cars with manual transmissions already are a thing of the past, although cars with manual transmissions are cheaper than automatic ones, but driving with manual transmissions is more difficult, especially in big cities where you often have to switch!!😉

Driving a car without a stick shift is boring as hell. Sad to see it go.

A stick is great for the open road, but in the city it loses its charm very quickly.

Snowflakes glory

US government: obey first before you complain. Me: Complain first before you obey.

Electric cars don’t even need transmissions

Some say if you use gas its not really driving

It lives on in my garage.

Meh, that's just a transmission gear shifting ratio manually by the driver under certain engine conditions to connect together. Having an automatic just means having liquid in a turbine in complexities shift it for you.

Getting the Ford Bronco. Manual. One of the goals is to teach the kids to drive stick!!! 1) because its fun. 2) no hands for holding phone!

good

Maybe in the US. Seem to be quite popular everywhere else.

I would ABSOLUTELY have a stick shift if they sold them in vehicles people want and need, and at higher trim levels. After all, if they can be fitted to a base level they can still fit with better upholstery.

I still drive a stick shift in a truck. Much better pulling and working. People who don't like them don't need them. Also most running their mouths about them don't know how to even drive one. LOL!

I’d rather ride a rickshaw in Bangladesh than ever drive a stick shift again. It’s archaic technology that should’ve gone away decades ago.

I love driving a stick shift! 2 car family and since 1967 one or both have been a manual. At 71, it’s still fun to control the drive! Sad for those who have never experienced the rush controlling the acceleration can be!

🔋 ⚡️

They said the same thing about the convertible. With a totally bogus and transparent explanation that no one believed. Then, the convertible came back. I drove a shift a few times. I don't see the fascination. I've always been a bench seat 4 door sedan type of person.

I LOVED driving my manual.

I gets hard to drink your Starbucks, eat a McMuffin, talk on your phone, pump breast milk, put on makeup,,,,and manually shift that 6 speed gearbox.

wow

I love my 7-Speed manual. I would hate it if I had to drive in traffic but I just drive for fun!

I wish I had a manual transmission, 2k for parts on a automatic is rediculous price. 100$ HR for labor. It's nuts.

Oh no! ❤ a stick shift

Hello, Would you like to see the Best mall of İstanbul? If your answer is yes, we invite you to watch our video. 🤗 If you have any question about Istanbul, we would like to help you ☺️

Traffic is what I think partially killed interest in the stick shift. Have you ever sat in traffic to only go from 1st gear ⚙ to 2nd gear ⚙ for over an hour? There is nothing fun about that. Given that many of the US streets are gridlocked, I can see why it's disappearing.

I had a stick shift once. It was a blast to drive....on the highway...where I could use all 6 gears. But a huge pain in the ass in the city. Never getting past 3rd before coming to another red light. The way they time them so you hit every single one is ridiculous! Never again.

The stick shift is a pain in the ass. Someone with carpal tunnel in their wrist would have excruciating pain trying to drive. And I think they got if from driving a stick. I know how, but I hate them. Why is everyone trying to take us back into the dark ages? Give me new tech.

well to be honest, you’re not really driving unless you don’t have power steering

I took my wife’s car into an auto shop for new tires. The installer grabs the keys and heads out to the parking lot. Minutes later he returns and sheepishly tells me I have to move the car into bay as he can’t drive a stick. It was all I could do to not bust up. Too funny.

It’s really engaging to drive stick. It makes me feel like I’m part of the car. But the market is shifting towards automatic, for many good reasons. Driving manual has gradually become an “enthusiast” thing.

Enjoyed a stick shift for 14 years all over, even in Los Angeles. Then the a hurricane flooded it down south. Will get another one sometime never say never.

Really amazing 🤔

It’s kind of pointless. Every worthwhile sports car manufacturer now makes an auto that can shift better than you, and it can still be shifted manually.

I don’t care to drive the car... I want the car to take me to....where I want to go!

I drive a 5 speed every day

Oh, and it wasn’t one these, it’s a mini

I had to special order mine, a 2019

I used to pretend I missed the manual gearbox. Then I spent 2 weeks visiting my brother driving his 2019 Mustang GT 6 speed manual in Ann Arbor traffic. Good God......soooooo much shifting!

Nothing more exhilarating than sitting in 5 o’clock stop and go traffic constantly depressing a clutch to speed along at 3 miles per hour.

Manual transmission is extremely overrated. Here in the UK it's the norm and I'd happily switch to an automatic.

Meanwhile... The rest of the world has manual transmissions. Good luck finding a rental car in Europe with an automatic transmission. If you do get one, expect to pay more for it!

It wasn't until 1977 when a rented car with an automatic transmission that shifted exactly where I would have did I comfortably accept them. But twenty years later, a rental had a nice short-throw stick with a synchromesh transmission that was a great pleasure to drive.

Good, nobody cares about your stupid stick cars. PS: I'm European; I know how to drive a stick.

thank you very much for your work

The ability to drive a stick will soon be another lost art.

Soon no more ICE cars in CA or related jobs. Next will be no more ICE boats, garden equipment, ships and even EV themselves because mining and smelting lithium are so much more environmentally damaging.

Electric cars don’t have a transmission. Lol!

Driving a manual makes you a safer driver. You have to be more aware.

My first car and truck were stick, I love stick but, I love automatic, especially steep hills.

I loved mine. You HAD to pay attention. No cell phone because both hands would be busy.

savethemanual

I agree.

nice

I have two 911s with stick shifts. I wouldn’t even know how to drive an automatic transmission

Driving a stick with no cup holders.

I am rather waiting for Driverless car

I'm among those who love a 'stick shift' when driving. Just a totally different experience from automatic transmission when driving. Sad that they're phasing it out.

Who says that? boomers? No body cares about stick shift anymore. Especially with electric cars becoming norm.

😥😥

Don’t lose the stick!

Electric vehicles are making this a mute point.

So has the rotary dialed phone, it dyed out already, and the smoke signaling DCT is everything a stick shift without using a stick and a manual clutch

First part is true. More focus on the mechanics, more control. I feel lazy in an automatic. Might as well have a chauffer. Where's the fun in that? The second part, well I pray that Armageddon happens first.

Take the fun out of everything why don’t you fools ! These agendas are pissing me off , make everyone dumb and nothing fun is the Goal. A manual transmission/ stick is safer than auto period !

Don’t you dare kill the stick ! for low IQ individuals

So i don't want to drive

Riding vs Driving! Facts!!

The future is electric Tesla elonmusk

Automatics are a fad. Manual is the future!

Agree

I finally had to let the manual transmission go. So few cars come with it. I am one of the 'some' who believe that.

That's nothing new. It has been dying a long time.

Ok ... How many times are you going to post this? It’s getting OLD 🤨

I miss wooden wheels ...

Personally I ENJOY driving a stick shift. I learned on a stick too.

Driving a stick is one of the prerequisites for being a testosterone jacked insecure young American male.

I hope they won’t seize to exist in my lifetime as they’re still very popular in other parts of the world and yes, you’re not really driving unless you’re driving a stick shift ;)

My first car and truck were stick. I got an automatic because when I drove the hills in San Francisco, there was no way I was using a stick shift.

Those some is right

Drove a stick from northern NJ to Hoboken for over 10 years and parallel parked there. Must have been insane. Good riddance.

Nnnnooooooo!!!!!!

Stick shifts, what's it? Shifting the sticking gears makes the car run? Should be called sticky shifts.

“ You ride in automatic shift car but you drive in manual shift car.” - John Dettore, ND, Mustang Club of America

I never learned and I’m wondering if I missed out! 🤔😔

The manual is definitely alive and well at Porsche ! A no cost option instead of the standard automatic, it just looks and feels so right.

Shift stick is no fun for city centre driving. The lazy Americans have done away with manual gear change decades ago. Only in the UK and their old colonial states manual gear transmission is still found.

Nah you’re trying too hard if you drive a stick*

Manual only for real enthusiasts, Porsche realized this with their recently announced GT3 which will still be available in manual (and naturally aspirated).

Still enjoy my manual transmission car even though these are going away.

I enjoyed my less powerful VW Golf w/ manual 5-speed transmission v. more powerful VW GTI automatic w/ paddle shifters....

titonavarrete8 we are going extinct 😢

Is safest and most enjoyable way to drive. Folks who like an LaZboy drive should just stay at home and watch TV. Manual trans make driver safer, enjoy ballet of physics of the road and performance of the machine !

I like stick shifts

Love it

Driving is a chore Driving is a privilege. This old lady sounds like she prefers public transit.

SaveTheManuals

I can see that for sure. The manual is an older technology that was popular with older generations. Younger generations have grown up with newer transmission technology. The smg or dct just to name a couple.

Transmission production is a job starter.

It’s on decline because an automatic transmission uses more gasoline.

Bring it back and make new drivers learn stick shift! Hear me out...they can't answer texts on their phones and cause accidents if they're shifting!

thats because its hard to drink and drive with a stick shift....duh

All the fun of driving a car will we be gone. 😭 You get also more 4 wheel drive in stead of rear wheel drive. Seems to be that Chinese and US customers ask for that.

I went to pick up my sons car from dealership for warranty work and it was taking them along time to bring the car up from service.....dealership said our person who could drive a stick shift was at lunch....my wife went to the back and drove the car away....couldn’t believe it

My last 6 cars have been manual. My 2 current cars are. I think of them as anti theft devices.

Some say changing gears bring more money. Is that true? I have to learn when others change gears. A lot of attention is required.

Im afraid rear wheel drive will also dissapear 😥 only Porsche devellop some proper cars, but too exspensive for my wallet.

So... why does anyone care? Is how he end his piece? Dude has never driven a car before! LAME!

If it's not an EV, it's boringgggg!

It's becoming a rare skill to have.

There is nothing like driving a stick shift especially down shifting around turns.

Millenials are too dumb to drive stick

TRUMP/PENCE 2020

How many people know how to manually clutch a vehicle? Not many I wager

What about tiptronic transmission!

I love my manual Infiniti G37s. I focus more on the road thanks to stick shift. You also can't text and drive.

It's hard to text and shift.

Not if my noys have any vote!!!! Both at 17&19 have manual trannies!!

Long live stick shifts.

👀

Drove stick for most of my life as in UK and automatics were rare or imports . Bought an Automatic Merc couple of years ago . What a difference! In sport mode amazing performance : I. eco mode smooth relaxing luxury . I’ll never drive stick again

Interesting.

I specially ordered my Mini so I could have a stick among other options

The new normal is ICB VS Eletric - Sticks are just a transmission anymore.

snowflakes can’t shift gears — plain and simple ... real men are now rare

I’d drive in Kabul than ever drive a stick shift again. It’s an archaic form of driving.

Manual is too dangerous in sports cars especially heavily modified one

Taking a hand off the steering wheel at high speed is not recommended. Just ask any F1 driver.

I used to only drive stick shift. It means almost no one could steal my car. I drive motorcycles now.

Everyone needs a dogleg 5 speed in their life.

Just something else millennials killed

I’m a point A to point B kind of person. Automatic 4 dayzzzz. If all you live for in life is driving a stick shift, you’ve got bigger issues in life.

I can't text and drive with a stick shift

Cool trends 📈

Who wants a manual transmission!!

Totally agree. Either full self driving or manual.

America is the only place still in love with the stick shift. Saying you aren’t really driving unless your driving a stick shift is like saying you aren’t really writing unless your hand writing in ink pen instead of using a keyboard and computer. Besides paddle shifts stick

When is it coming ? KatyTurNBC WhiteHouse ScuderiaFerrari

TheWallStBull As a German I would love to drive an automatic. The problem here is almost anyone here drives stick. So you lose a lot of money when you sell you car because nobody really wants it.

Without a stick you're just riding in the car not driving.

Still remember the joy of switching from stick shift to auto

Sad. Nothing like learning to drive stick on icy slopes with angry Massholes behind you whom you fear of rolling back into when the light turns green.

A tesla model S is faster than those cars. Go get one at

BS.... I drove a stick for years and I don’t miss it at all.

What all ths sht with manual transmission? I like manual transmission

I like this presentation

Less than 2% of vehicles sold in the US in 2019 had a manual transmission. Soon it will be gone. Too bad.

Great line, “ You ride in an automatic but you drive a manual”

Short lived loss (still sad) compared to “no longer driving the car!” 😳 AutonomousVehicles

If you can find some free tarmac, by all means shift away. But if you commute in traffic— why punish yourself?

The cars are getting so fast that it's easier to let the computer do it because if it was left to a human it wouldn't be as fast or accurate

You can't roll a joint while driving a stick.

Vrooom!

I assume my current car will be my last manual — but that’s because when we shift to electric engines there’s no need.

Sticks are the only way to drive. Laziness drives sales of automatic.

I prefer a manual transmission! Next car will be. Another advantage of Mt is these young boys doing their car jackings don't know how to drive a manual transmission rofdlmao

I wish cars would die out.

And it sucks:(

In Europe is still quite popular, especially in the UK.

Standard. in Europe. Special request to get auto in EU.

Manual wont die as long as racing exists.

Manual all the way!

Men who drive stick are somehow more manly🥴 When people at my high school found out that I drove a stick, that somehow made me cool.

Whoa! Only 2%? I love driving manual transmissions. I don’t currently own one, but if I had a second car, it would be a stick.

An excerpt from 'You're first to arrive to await a green light. Within seconds, you're surrounded … You can no longer see the light. The…appearance of a green light is suggested by the roar of accelerating vehicles. [All] you can do: pop the clutch.'

Honestly I got sick of driving stick shift. It was fun for awhile.

Я вам не верю

Most important part of that video was the last 10 seconds. Answer that question before posting next time

High end vehicles are catering to the Middle Eastern and Asian market. There are also a larger market for woman. For years it was wear the money was and it is cheaper to make one drive train. Now add the aging boomers and the stick is dead. I still prefer it but hard to get

Shrinking does not lead to death... Fyi.

my first car was a stick, Honda Accord, then moved to automatic, years later bought a Volvo S60R stick, retired that after 4-5 years, now drive auto... I miss the manual transmission 😢

Who the fuck wants to shift through gears in bumper to bumper traffic?

Try renting a car in the UK, where you will have to shift with left hand.

Kinda sad but I guess the world likes convenient stuff.

Heartbreaking. savethestick

I drive a manual car ( personal car) and auto while at work. Manual is dead! No one wants to keep shifting gears in start stop traffic. Plus if the future is electric cars. Bye bye gears in all!

NO MORE MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS FOR ME

My Camero has both, standard & automatic..but, no clutch. A guy I work with said, his Dodge was the same way

you can't drive anymore. no room. we just idle to work and idle back. our infrastructure 50 years behind . the economy can only expand with a modern and innovative infrastructure ! Everything is to crunched up and way over crowed !

Disappearing? On driverless cars & trucks, is stick shift an option?

If you regularly get stuck in stop & go traffic, you quickly understand the attraction of the automatic vs the manual that requires constant shifting in low gears only. No longer fun, it's now a PITA. =:-O (a sports car fan)🏎️

Millennials will never know the fun

2018 Accord Sport with a 6 speed. Love that car

Or you aren’t good at driving a car more than like it.

This is hot garbage. Get your steamed pile of garbage right here.

Can’t all be queer, race will die out.

Sad... but it is....

Why Stick Shifts Are Going Extinct via YouTube

It‘s no secret that Americans have never liked the stick shift. But it‘s just the better choice, no question.

Sad to see it go. Nothing like rowing through the gears of a big V8.

Get rid of GPS, automatic rollup windows; now you're really driving a car.

it's true... driving a sports car correctly requires one to shift gears....

That's because people are in traffic and not enjoying driving with speed as people once where able to do . Ask the traffic cops.

Noooo! 😢 Manuals are such fun though!!!

A dying breed for sure! Would never want to give mine up

As a manual devotee I'm crushed..

Very true. Even semi-truck fleets are moving away from manual transmissions and going to automatics.

Manuals are fun but can be annoying in heavy traffic. Yep I’ve gotten old. Manuals 💯 for the “toy” or “weekend” car and automatics for every day/work.

Automatic transmission are in most cases the most expensive thing to repair in a vehicle. Durability of a manual after vehicles age past 7 years is the real cost saver for people who always buy “used”

MMM MORE ADVERTISING! I LOVE CORONAVIRUS :D SIT AT HOME AND WATCH TV SO WE CAN BRAINWASH YOU.

I've always said that driving tests should be a stick shift in winter while drinking coffee after 2 shots of vodka while texting - you get three chances.

We've always had gearshifts. I would say the majority in Germany still uses them.

Years ago, I was taught that a stick shift is faster out of the blocks, during a one-on-one race against automatic. I was told that a human know better when to change gears thus getting more out of kW from the engine. They were wrong, correct?

Most super cars are purchase by people that do not drive stick or do not have the capability to drive a super car with a stick. Besides as most of these cars end up in cities they often would never get out of first.

Well..my 2020 camero has both. No clutch, when you are in standard it automatically downshifts when you slow down. And you got a choice of automatic, the sales guy didn't go over this with me on the test drive, when I pulled out of the dealership..

Is this a shifter car? I can't drive a shifter car. I drive luxury cars. My cars shift themselves. buffalo66 screwtv

I have always had a manual and when I ordered cars, the salesman..never had a saleswoman so far..would look at me like I was bonkers. I am in need of a new car but have been putting it off because of the lack of transmission choices.
