Energy Energy Headlines News

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): The Ministry of Energy and Mines has said that the domestic distribution of electricity is likely to rise to 28,886 million kWh, worth about US$2,465 million by the end of 2020, according to its 8th five-year energy development plan for 2016-2020.

The information was shared by a ministry official at a recent annual meeting of the energy and mines sector held in Vientiane.

However, coverage by the national power grid is still limited due to a lack of funding for power grid development and the isolated communities that are unreachable at various borders. The neighbouring countries of China, Thailand and Vietnam are the main electricity suppliers to Laos. Meanwhile, the combined electricity from China will be about 220 million kWh, valued at US$15 million, a 73 per cent decrease over the past five-year plan.

During this period, the Thai government expects to buy about 9,000MW of electricity from Laos, Cambodia about 6,000MW, Vietnam about 5,000MW, Myanmar about 300MW, and Malaysia about 300MW.
