WATCH the moment an armed robbery was nearly thwarted when a bumbling crook got his backpack stuck breaking into a Victorian petrol station.

It took three to pull off the crime at the Midland Highway just after 1am today but one hooded thief nearly botched the robbery when his bag became stuck in the door.

He flailed around with a machete in one hand until breaking free just as his accomplices returned with cash, cigarettes and energy drinks which were stolen at knife-point. No one was physically injured and detectives have released the footage in a bid to get information from the public.
