We must protect the penguins at all costs.

Numbers of chinstrap penguins have fallen by almost three fifths in half a century in an important Antarctic habitat for the birds, scientists said.

Overall, the number of chinstrap penguins on Elephant Island has fallen by almost 60%, from 122,550 breeding pairs recorded in the survey 50 years ago to 52,786 today – with climate change thought to be behind the drop. Reduced sea ice and warmer oceans, as a result of climate change, is thought to have led to less krill, the small shrimp-like creatures that the penguins primarily feed on.
