The votes were split entirely down party lines, with Senator Mitt Romney as the sole Republican who broke ranks and voted to convict Trump on abuse of power. There’s an argument that even with this bleak ending, this at least puts Trump’s impeachment on the record, and markscomplicit collaborators. But when these same politicians gleefully, guiltlessly stand by as Trump and his administration conduct countless other despicable acts, the weeks of impeachment drama feel—well, fucking stupid. History will remember that nothing was accomplished.
The impeachment process was Congress' constitutional duty, whether or not it was going to be successful. It drives me batty how many people think it's a waste of time to attempt to hold people accountable, even if you know it's not going to succeed. It's their JOBS.
He was never going to be removed because that many GOP Senators would defect. It's too early to judge the historical signicance. If Trump loses in 2020 it was worth it. If the Senate is flipped, then it's of monumental significance.
